East Soldier River Bridge
The East Soldier River Bridge was located southwest of Charter Oak, Iowa, United States. It carried traffic on 120th Street over the East Soldier River. Steel was in short supply during World War II as a part of the war effort. with Many bridges built across the state were built in this era with timber, especially small-scale bridges. Heavy flooding washed out 27 bridges and culverts in Crawford County in May 1945. The county board of supervisors used emergency funds to build new bridges. They bought several steel superstructures from the Des Moines Steel Company to replace the wash-out spans. The bowstring arch-truss structures appear to have been designed by H. Gene McKeown, a civil engineer from Council Bluffs. This bridge is one of several similar structures built in the county. East Soldier River
The Soldier River is a tributary of the Missouri River, about long,U.S. Geological Survey. Several portions of the river's course have been straightened and channelized. The Soldier River rises in southeastern Ida County and flows generally southwestwardly through northwestern Crawford, southeastern Monona and northwestern Harrison Counties, past the towns of Ute, Soldier, Moorhead and Pisgah. It flows into the Missouri River via a diversion channel about 5 mi (8 km) west-northwest of Mondamin. At Ute, the river collects the East Soldier River, which rises near Schleswig and flows past Charter Oak. The East Soldier River collects the Middle Soldier River, which flows past Ricketts. Charter Oak, Iowa
Charter Oak is a city in Crawford County, Iowa, United States, along the East Soldier River. The population was 535 at the 2020 census. History Charter Oak was first mentioned in newspapers August 13, 1869. The town Post Office was established May 4, 1876. The Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway was completed in February 1887, bringing the train through town twice daily as it hauled postage and freight from Manilla to Sioux City. Articles of Incorporation were filed for the town of Charter Oak February 14, 1891. Charter Oak was a busy community with many businesses to employ community members. The first school was built in 1889, as the community grew the school became too small. The current school building was built in 1916. In 1929 the first street was paved. In 1980 the freight service on the Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul Railroad ended, the rail line was removed, and the station was sold.
