Irving Cummings
Irving Caminsky (October 9, 1888 – April 18, 1959) was an American movie actor and director. Career Born in New York City, Cummings started his acting career at age 16 in ''Diplomacy''. His Broadway, performances included ''In the Long Run'' (1909) and ''Object -- Matrimony'' (1916). Acting in the Proctor Stock Company, Cummings appeared with Lillian Russell and other actresses. He entered into movies in 1909, acting with the P. A. Powers company in Mount Vernon, New York, and quickly became a popular leading man. Few of the films he made as an actor are easily available, except for Buster Keaton's first feature film, ''The Saphead'' (1920), in which Cummings plays a crooked stockbroker and Fred Niblo's film Sex (1920), one of the first films to depict a new phenomenon in 1920s America, the Flapper. Wally Van (born Charles Wallace Van Nostrand; September 27, 1880 – May 9, 1974) was an American actor and film director of the silent era. Early years Van was born Charles Wallace Van Nostrand on September 27, 1880, in New Hyde Park, New York. His Dutch ancestors settled in New York in 1638. His father, Charles A. Van Nostrand, worked in the United States Customs Office, Van had two sisters and a brother. After being educated in Brooklyn's public schools, he graduated from the School of Sciences in New York City. Friends in college began calling him Wally Van. He graduated from a technical school as a civil engineer, but later he sold leather goods, then worked as an electrical engineer. As an engineer, he worked for the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company. A job maintaining engines of speedboats owned by the president of Vitagraph Studios provided an opening for him to get into films. Charles Hill Mailes (25 May 1870 – 17 February 1937) was a Canadian actor of the silent era. Biography Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1870, Mailes appeared in 290 films between 1909 and 1935. Elizabeth Jane May (1904–1949), was an actress during the silent film era in America. Biography Born in Cripple Creek, Colorado on 22 June 1904, May worked in cinema from the early 1920s until 1936, appearing in at least sixteen films. May made her first appearance for Century Comedy (also known as Century Comedies), a production company founded by Abe and Julius Stern. She was signed to a long term contract by Julius Stern in 1922. She was described in trade publications at the time as "the Century beauty" who was cast in ingenue roles but who "shows the ability to do more ambitious roles." Her debut was in the 1922 film ''Upper and Lower'', a comedy directed by Alf Goulding. With Century Comedy Films, she appeared in several film with Lee Moran as the lead, as well as several starring "Queenie The Human Horse."
