East Rochester is a neighborhood within the city of Rochester, New Hampshire, United States, located on the banks of the Salmon Falls River which separates Maine from New Hampshire. Home to approximately 3,600 residents,2020 Census population count for census tract most closely covering East Rochester: the community is located east of Rochester proper, and is one of two villages (the other being Gonic) within city limits. The area was a farming community which developed into a small textile and shoe manufacturing mill town during the Industrial Revolution. The Abenaki people called the area's river ''Newichawannock'', meaning "river with many falls", which in the 19th century became the source of water power for two mills. The first was called the Cocheco Woolen Manufacturing Company, with the second smaller one built upstream and called the White Mill. East Rochester is a coterminous town and village located southeast of the City of Rochester in Monroe County, New York, United States. The village, home to approximately 6,600 people, is surrounded by Pittsford on the west side and by Perinton to the east. Most of the southern boundary is delimited by New York State Route 31F. History Beginnings The village of East Rochester was originally known as the Village of Despatch when the community was incorporated in 1897. Despatch was laid out as a planned community designed around the New York Central Railroad mainline that ran through the center of the village. Much of the original land which became the village came from Fairport businessman Walter Parce. This land was used to develop housing for employees of the earliest employers: The Merchants Despatch Corporation and the Aeolian Piano Corporation. East Rochester is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in southern West Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 224 as of the 2020 census. It lies along U.S. Route 30, and has a post office with the ZIP code 44625. It is a part of the Salem micropolitan area, about east of Canton. History East Rochester was originally known officially as "Rochester", and under the latter name was platted in 1834. The Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad was built through the settlement in 1852. When the post office was established, the name "East Rochester" was adopted to avoid repetition with another Rochester, Ohio. A post office called East Rochester has been in operation since 1840.
