Western Australian Legislative Council
The Western Australian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, a state of Australia. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Effective on 20 May 2005, for the election of members of the Legislative Council, the State was divided into 6 electoral regions by community of interest —3 metropolitan and 3 rural—each electing 6 members to the Legislative Council.. The 2005 changes continued to maintain the previous malapportionment in favour of rural regions. Legislation was passed in 2021 to abolish these regions and increase the size of the council to 37 seats, all of which will be elected by the state-at-large. Western Australian Liberal Party (1911–1917)
The Western Australian Liberal Party was a political party which existed from 1911 until 1917 in the Australian state of Western Australia. Background The Party, which had its roots in various earlier political movements, came together in the period immediately prior to the 1911 state election under the guidance of Sir John Forrest, the Federal member for Swan and former Premier of Western Australia, and other leading political figures in the State. It was assembled in response to the solid organisation of the Labor Party and had the aim of assisting Ministerial members in winning seats and retaining power in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. David Black (historian)
David William Black (born 1936) is a Western Australian historian. He has lectured and written extensively on Australian and Western Australian history, especially political history. He was Professor in History and Politics in the School of Social Sciences and Asian Languages at Curtin University of Technology until his retirement in 2002, and is now professor emeritus. He is currently Chairperson of the Parliamentary History Advisory Committee, and a Parliamentary Fellow (History). He has had numerous publications and considerable media exposure in regard to parliamentary history in Western Australia. Charles Latham
Sir Charles George Latham (26 January 1882 – 26 August 1968), often shortened to simply C. G. Latham, was an Australian politician, former leader of the opposition in Western Australia and the 10th President of the Western Australian Legislative Council. Latham served over twelve years as leader of the state's Country Party, and over thirty years in the Parliament of Western Australia. Latham also served roughly ten months in the Federal Parliament, as a Senator for Western Australia. Biography Latham was born in Hythe, Kent in England, and became an orphan before the age of 8 when his parents Thomas Latham (a coast guard) and Isabella (née Isum) died. Latham moved to New South Wales in Australia with his siblings in 1890 and married Marie Louisa von Allwörden on 24 June 1903 at Hay in the same state. Garnet Wood
Garnet Barrington Wood (1 July 1888 – 3 January 1952) was an Australian politician who served as a Country Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1936 until his death. He was a minister in the government of Ross McLarty. Early life Wood was born in Fremantle, Western Australia, to Mary Louisa (née Whitfield) and Barrington Clarke Wood. His father, who died when he was 15, was also a member of parliament and government minister. Wood attended Hale School, Perth, and after graduating worked for a period as an accountant for Western Australian Government Railways. He moved to Carrolup (in the Great Southern) in 1912, and later farmed at Narrogin and York. Wood was elected to the York Road Board in 1932, and would serve until 1951. Herbert Yelland
Herbert John Yelland (27 February 1878 – 22 May 1962) was a Member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1924 to 1936. Herbert Yelland was born at Point Macleay in South Australia on 27 February 1878. The son of a farmer, he was educated at Roseworthy Agricultural College, and in 1899 started working for the South Australian education department. By 1901 he had emigrated to Western Australia and was working as a schoolmaster at Midland. In 1904 he took up a position of Clerk in the Lands Department, remaining there until 1911. In 1905 he married Rose Franklin; they had two sons and one daughter. Yelland resigned his job in 1911 and took up land in the Bruce Rock district, becoming one of the district's pioneer farmers. Yelland joined the Nationalist Party in 1923, and that August unsuccessfully contested the Legislative Council seat of East Province in a by-election. William Carroll (Australian Politician)
William Carroll (3 January 1872 – 30 May 1936) was an Australian politician. Born in Garvoc, Victoria, Garvoc, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, he was educated at Horsham, Victoria, Horsham before moving to Western Australia during the gold rush to become a miner, and subsequently became a farmer at Tammin, Western Australia, Tammin. He was General Secretary of the Western Australian Primary Producers' Association, and was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1923 to 1924. In 1925, he was elected to the Australian Senate as a National Party of Australia, Country Party Senator for Western Australia. The Nationalist Party, also known as the National Party, was an Australian political party. It was formed on 17 February 1917 from a merger between the Commonwealth Liberal Party and the National Labor Party, the latter formed by Prime Minister Billy Hughes and his supporters after the 1916 Labor Party split over World War I conscription. The National Party of Australia (WA) Inc, branded The Nationals WA, is a political party in Western Australia. It is affiliated with the National Party of Australia but maintains a separate structure and identity. Since the 2021 state election, the Nationals WA is the senior party in an opposition alliance with the WA Liberal Party in the WA Parliament. Prior to the election, the National Party was sitting in the crossbench and the Liberal Party was the sole opposition party.
