East London Coast Nature Reserve
East London Coast Nature Reserve is a protected area in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa that is managed by Eastern Cape Parks. It covers an area of 3,424 hectares and incorporates 12 smaller nature reserves and protected areas. The main reasons for its existence are the preservation of the region's biodiversity, protection of natural vegetation and management of extraterrestrial vegetation. Parks The nature reserve is built up from various disconnected smaller parks, and has a total area of 3,424 hectares. It extends from the Great Kei River in the east to the Tyolomnqa River (Chalumna) in the west, along about 250 km of coastline. Indian Ocean
The Indian Ocean is the third-largest of the world's five oceanic divisions, covering or ~19.8% of the water on Earth's surface. It is bounded by Asia to the north, Africa to the west and Australia to the east. To the south it is bounded by the Southern Ocean or Antarctica, depending on the definition in use. Kwelera National Botanical Garden
The Kwelera National Botanical Garden is located at the Kwelera Nature Reserve on the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape. It lies at the mouth of the Kwelera River. The garden is the 10th national botanical garden established in South Africa and the first in the Eastern Cape. History In 1994, the Kwelera Island Local Nature Reserve was established as a protected area at the mouth of the Kwelera River. It is found opposite the garden. In 2014, 10.48 ha of farmland beside the Kwelera Nature Reserve was purchased by SANBI for the creation of the Kwelera National Botanical Garden. This land was added to the existing Kwelera Nature Reserve which will serve as the natural portion of the botanical garden. It would be jointly managed by SANBI and Eastern Cape Parks. Umtiza Nature Reserve
The Umtiza Nature Reserve is one of two forest nature reserves in the greater East London Coast Nature Reserve. It is named after '' Umtiza listeriana'', a rare and protected legume found within the reserve. The Buffalo River borders the northern part of the reserve, and includes the remaining Umtiza Forest on the southern banks of the river. The Buffalo Pass traverses the entirety of the reserve and the surrounding Controlled Forest Area. History The Fort Grey State forest which is found south of the current reserve, was proclaimed a protected forest prior to the Union of South Africa. The Fort Pato Nature Reserve is one of two inland forest reserves in the greater East London Coast Nature Reserve, located in the Wild Coast region of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Chalumna
The Chalumna River ( xh, Tyolomnqa) is a river in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. It is approximately 78 km long, forming at the confluence of two small rivers, the Qugwala in the West and the Mtyolo in the East. It empties into the Indian Ocean through an estuary near Kayser's Beach. Its catchment area of 441 km makes it one of the smallest river basins on South Africa's eastern coast. Its tributaries are Nyatyora, Nxwashu, Quru and Mpintso on the left and Rode, Twecu and Tsaba on the right. Its mouth is located about 45 km south west of the Buffalo Estuary at East London. Kayser's Beach is a small village on the shore of the Indian Ocean, southwest of East London in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. According to the census of 2011 it had 697 inhabitants. Gonubie is a town in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Seaside town at the mouth of the Gqunube (Gonubie) River, 21 km north-east of East London.
