East Kilbride South (ward)
East Kilbride South is one of the 20 electoral wards of South Lanarkshire Council. Created in 2007, the ward elects three councillors using the single transferable vote electoral system and covers an area with a population of 16,985 people. The ward is a Scottish National Party (SNP) stronghold with the party holding two of the three seats at every election since the ward was created. Boundaries The ward was created following the Fourth Statutory Reviews of Electoral Arrangements ahead of the 2007 Scottish local elections. As a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, local elections in Scotland would use the single transferable vote electoral system from 2007 onwards so East Kilbride South was formed from an amalgamation of several previous first-past-the-post wards. Lindsayfield
Lindsayfield is a residential area in the new town of East Kilbride, Scotland. The modern estate was constructed from the 1990s onwards. Overview Lindsayfield is situated next to the districts of Greenhills and Whitehills. The main road around the outside of Lindsayfield extends offering a drive to the villages of Auldhouse, Strathaven, Chapelton and Leaburn. The main road through the area currently just ends at a dead end. However, in the near future, the road will be continued through to Jackton, to allow for a large new part of the town to be built in the Jackton Community Growth Area. The new estate will, like Lindsayfield, use the Jackton Road as the boundary, but will also use the Hayhill Road. 2022 South Lanarkshire Council Election
Elections to South Lanarkshire Council took place on 5 May 2022 on the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections. For the second consecutive election, the Scottish National Party were returned with the most seats at 27 but remained shy of an overall majority. Labour made small gains to again finish second with an increased number of members with 24 – up two from 2017 – while the Conservatives lost half their number to return seven members. The Liberal Democrats and independents both made two gains to return three and two members respectively while the Greens won their first ever seat in South Lanarkshire. On 18 May, Labour and the Lib Dems announced that they would run the council as a coalition, alongside one independent councillor, with support from the Conservatives. 2017 South Lanarkshire Council Election
Elections to South Lanarkshire Council were held on 4 May 2017 on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election used the twenty wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with 64 Councillors being elected, a reduction of 3 members from 2012. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. Following the 2017 election, the Scottish National Party attempted to form a coalition with Labour and the Liberal Democrats which was unsuccessful. The SNP then formed a minority administration. 2012 South Lanarkshire Council Election
Elections to South Lanarkshire Council took place on 3 May 2012 on the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections. Labour retained their position as the largest party on the council as they gained three seat from 2007 but were one seat short of an overall majority. The Scottish National Party (SNP) also increased their representation and remained in second place on the authority after gaining four seats to hold 28. The Conservatives lost the majority of their seats as they fell from eight to three. One less independent candidate was elected with two returned and the remaining seat was won by the Liberal Democrats who lost one seat. 2007 South Lanarkshire Council Election
Elections to South Lanarkshire Council took place on 3 May 2007 on the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections. The election was the first to use the 20 new wards created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, each ward electing three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system form of proportional representation. The new wards replaced the 67 single-member wards which used the plurality (first past the post) system of election. Labour retained their position as the largest party on the council but were no longer in overall control after the introduction of proportional voting saw them lose 22 seats. Avondale And Stonehouse (ward)
Avondale and Stonehouse is one of the twenty wards used to elect members of the South Lanarkshire Council. Created in 2007, it elects three councillors. Its territory covers the small towns of Strathaven and Stonehouse, the villages of Chapelton and Glassford and a rural hinterland to the west up to the local authority borders with East Ayrshire and East Renfrewshire – a 2017 national boundary review removed a corridor of farmland between the White Cart Water and southern East Kilbride where housebuilding was planned (although the nearby Benthall Farm development was not re-assigned at that time, still falling just within Avondale and Stonehouse despite being an extension of the Lindsayfield suburb). This review also caused the loss of one seat from the original four despite the electorate increasing slightly, to balance with other wards with similar populations but only three seats. White Cart Water
The River Cart ( sco, River Cairt) is a tributary of the River Clyde, Scotland, which it joins from the west roughly midway between the towns of Erskine and Renfrew and opposite the town of Clydebank. The River Cart itself is very short, being formed from the confluence of the Black Cart Water (from the west) and the White Cart Water (from the south east) and is only long. The River Cart and its tributary the White Cart Water were navigable as far as the Seedhill Craigs at Paisley; and, as with the River Clyde, various improvements were made to this river navigation. In 1840 the Forth and Cart Canal was opened, linking the Forth and Clyde Canal, at Whitecrook near Clydebank, to the River Clyde, opposite the mouth of the River Cart. The Murray, East Kilbride
The Murray is a residential area in the new town of East Kilbride, in South Lanarkshire, Scotland; it lies immediately to the south-west of the town centre (access for pedestrians is mainly via underpasses beneath the A726 Queensway), and adjacent to the Westwood, Greenhills and Whitehills neighbourhoods to the west, south-west and south-east respectively. The Murray was the first new town development in the area and as such contains the oldest council housing in the town. However, much of this is currently undergoing renovation to improve its condition. Much of the original housing was paid for by Rolls-Royce, as it was intended as accommodation for the workers attracted to the town by the firm's factory.
