Earth Journalism Network
Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is an Internews and Internews Europe project. Internews is an international non-profit organization. Work Fellowships Both independently and in partnership with other organizations, the Earth Journalism Network awards fellowships to journalists which allow them to attend conferences within the field of environmentalism. During these events, which have included several Conferences of the Parties (COPs) and Rio+20, journalists participate in activities and report on event developments for their local media outlets. Prior to and throughout these events, EJN holds workshops to train reporters on environmental journalism best practices. Internews Network, now Internews, is a 501(c)(3) organization incorporated in California, formed in 1982. It was founded by David M. Hoffman, Kim Spencer, and Evelyn Messinger. The president and CEO is Jeanne Bourgault. Internews Europe is an independent media development organization, based in London, United Kingdom and relying mainly on European funding. Internews Europe is chaired by Mark Stephens (solicitor). One of the organization's first projects was a series of Spacebridges that connected the U.S. and Soviet Union by satellite, a program that culminated with a TV series named "Capital to Capital" that aired on ABC and won an Emmy Award in 1988. Internews Europe is an international development organisation founded in 1995 that specialises in media development which includes supporting independent media and free information flows in fragile states, emerging democracies and some of the world’s poorest countries. In doing so, it tries to promote good governance, human rights, effective response to humanitarian crises and access to information on critical issues such as the environment and climate change. United Nations Framework Convention On Climate Change
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) established an international environmental treaty to combat "dangerous human interference with the climate system", in part by stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. It was signed by 154 states at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), informally known as the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro from 3 to 14 June 1992. Its original secretariat was in Geneva but relocated to Bonn in 1996. It entered into force on 21 March 1994. The treaty called for ongoing scientific research and regular meetings, negotiations, and future policy agreements designed to allow ecosystems to adapt naturally to climate change, to ensure that food production is not threatened and to enable economic development to proceed in a sustainable manner. Hang Serei Odom
Hang Serei Odom (also known as Hang Serei Oudom) (1970 – 11 September 2012), was a Cambodian journalist for the ''Virakchun Khmer Daily'' newspaper in the Ou Chum district of northeastern Ratanakiri province of Cambodia, was involved in environmental reporting about illegal logging when he was murdered. Odom was the first reporter in Cambodia since 2008 to be killed while reporting or for his reporting. Career During his time working for the ''Virakchun Khmer Daily newspaper'', Hang Serei Odom was known for reporting on stories that involved illegal logging activities. In the months before his death, he uncovered several cases that were linked to Cambodia's elite, including a story published 6 September about the son of a military police commander, causing investigations into their involvement in illegal logging. Illegal Logging
Illegal logging is the harvest, transportation, purchase or sale of timber in violation of laws. The harvesting procedure itself may be illegal, including using corrupt means to gain access to forests; extraction without permission, or from a protected area; the cutting down of protected species; or the extraction of timber in excess of agreed limits. Illegal logging is a driving force for a number of environmental issues such as deforestation, soil erosion and biodiversity loss which can drive larger scale environmental crisis such as climate change and other forms of environmental degradation. Andrew C. Revkin is an American science and environmental journalist, author and educator. He has written on a wide range of subjects including destruction of the Amazon rain forest, the 2004 Asian tsunami, sustainable development, climate change, and the changing environment around the North Pole. He is the founding director of the Initiative on Communication and Sustainability at The Earth Institute of Columbia University.
