Early To Bed (1933 Film)
''Early to Bed'' is a 1933 British-German romantic comedy film directed by Ludwig Berger and starring Heather Angel, Fernand Gravey and Edmund Gwenn. Production The film was made as a co-production between the German giant UFA and Gaumont British. As was common at the time, the film was made as a multiple-language production with three separate versions modelled on the German original ''I by Day, You by Night''. ''Early to Bed'' was made at the Babelsberg Studio in Berlin, along with the French and German versions. Robert Stevenson acted as a supervisor. Ludwig Berger (director)
Ludwig Berger (born Ludwig Bamberger; 6 January 1892 – 18 May 1969) was a German-Jewish film director, screenwriter and theatre director. He directed more than 30 films between 1920 and 1969. Berger began working in the German film industry during the Weimar Republic. At Decla-Bioscop and later UFA he established a reputation as a leading director of silent films. He emigrated to Hollywood, but was unable to establish himself and returned to Europe. He subsequently worked both in France and Germany. He was a member of the jury at the 6th Berlin International Film Festival. Berger also translated a few plays of Shakespeare, including ''Cymbeline'', ''Hamlet'', and ''Timon of Athens''. His elder brother was the set designer Rudolf Bamberger who was killed in 1945. ''I by Day, You by Night'' (german: Ich bei Tag und du bei Nacht) is a 1932 German musical comedy film directed by Ludwig Berger and starring Käthe von Nagy and Willy Fritsch. It was shot at the Babelsberg Studios and on location at the Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam. The film's sets were designed by the art director Otto Hunte. It premiered in Berlin on 29 November 1932.Hardt p. 241 As was common at the time separate English- and French- language versions were released, both directed by Berger. The British version ''Early to Bed'' was co-produced with Gaumont British. The plot is very similar to the 1933 American film, ''Rafter Romance'' and it's 1937 remake, ''Living on Love'', though these films are based on a 1932 novel also named "Rafter Romance". The Comedian Harmonists were an internationally famous, all-male German close harmony ensemble that performed between 1928 and 1934 as one of the most successful musical groups in Europe before World War II. The group consisted of Harry Frommermann ( tenor buffo), Asparuh "Ari" Leschnikoff (first tenor), Erich Collin (second tenor), Roman Cycowski ( baritone), Robert Biberti ( bass), and Erwin Bootz (pianist). The hallmark of the Comedian Harmonists was its members' ability to blend their voices together so that the individual singers could appear and disappear back into the vocal texture. Leslie Perrins
Leslie Perrins (7 October 1901 – 13 December 1962) was an English actor who often played villains. After training at RADA, he was on stage from 1922, and in his long career, appeared in well over 60 films. Hobbies Perrins and wife Violet were dog lovers, and he was a judge at Crufts in 1957, and president of the Welsh Corgi League from 1956 until his death. Their annual award, "The Leslie Perrins Memorial Trophy," is named after him. He wrote a book called 'Keeping a Corgi'. It was published in 1958. Helen Maud Holt (5 October 1863 – 7 August 1937), professionally known as Mrs Beerbohm Tree and later Lady Tree, was an English actress. She was the wife of the actor Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and the mother of Viola Tree, Felicity Tree and Iris Tree. After early stage appearances beginning in 1883, Mrs Tree married and established a theatrical partnership with her husband, in which they appeared in revivals of classic plays and productions of new plays, first at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket and then at Her Majesty's Theatre. Her performances in serious roles were well received, but she was most celebrated for her work in comedy, from Shakespeare to new works by Wilde and others.
