Blue Earth County, Minnesota
Blue Earth County is a county in the State of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 69,112. Its county seat is Mankato. The county is named for the Blue Earth River and for the deposits of blue-green clay once evident along the banks of the Blue Earth River. Blue Earth County is part of the Mankato-North Mankato metropolitan area. History The area of Blue Earth County was once occupied by the Dakota Indians. French explorer Pierre-Charles Le Sueur was an early explorer in this area, arriving where the Minnesota and Blue Earth rivers meet. He made an unsuccessful attempt to mine copper from the blue earth. The area remained under French control until 1803 when it passed to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase. When Minnesota became a territory in 1849, the territorial government became interested in settling the river valley. Eagle Lake is in Blue Earth County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 3,278 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Mankato- North Mankato Metropolitan Statistical Area. U.S. Route 14 and Minnesota State Highway 60 are two of the main arterial routes in the community. History A post office was established in the area in 1870 and the village created was named Spier. It wasn't until 1873 the name was changes to Eagle Lake. The townsite was platted in 1872. It was named after nearby Eagle Lake. A post office has been in operation in Eagle Lake since 1873. Bald Eagle
The bald eagle (''Haliaeetus leucocephalus'') is a bird of prey found in North America. A sea eagle, it has two known subspecies and forms a species pair with the white-tailed eagle (''Haliaeetus albicilla''), which occupies the same niche as the bald eagle in the Palearctic. Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. It is found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting. The bald eagle is an opportunistic feeder which subsists mainly on fish, which it swoops down upon and snatches from the water with its talons. It builds the largest nest of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species, up to deep, wide, and in weight.
