ESSO Club
The Esso Club is a sports bar in Clemson, South Carolina, that evolved from a 1920s gas station and grocery on Old Greenville Highway, which was at the time the main highway between Atlanta, Georgia and Greenville, South Carolina. As local historians note, the corporate trademark change to Exxon went unnoticed by local patrons and the original Esso oval sign is still displayed out front. The business stopped pumping gas in the winter of 1985 and now functions as a sports bar. ''The Atlanta Journal-Constitution'' described it as the best bar in the South. ''ESPN The Magazine'' picked the Esso Club as their top pick for college sports bars, and "patrons can taste-test the beer in a niche dubbed the 'Educational Corner'". Billy Carter
William Alton Carter (March 29, 1937 – September 25, 1988) was an American farmer, businessman, brewer, and politician. The younger brother of U.S. President Jimmy Carter; he promoted Billy Beer and Peanut Lolita; and he was a candidate for mayor of Plains, Georgia. 1970s and later In 1972, Billy Carter purchased a gas and service station in Plains. RPAA
The Regional Planning Association of America ("RPAA"), formed by Clarence Stein was an urban reform association developed in 1923. The association was a diverse group of people all with their own talents and skills. The goal of this group was to “connect a diverse group of friends in a critical examination of the city, in the collaborative development and dissemination of ideas, in political action and in city building projects”. Throughout the ten-year span in which the association lasted, five leading members contributed to this goal. Redneck Performing Arts Association
The Redneck Performing Arts Association, or RPAA for short, is a group of Clemson, South Carolina patrons of the ESSO Club, who sponsored a three-day music festival beginning in 1981 to raise money for charity. Spittoono featured local bands who performed for free for the exposure. No admission was charged to the family-friendly event, held since 1991 at the Clemson National Guard Armory in Pendleton, South Carolina. Charity dollars were raised through the sale of annual tee-shirts, and of cold beverages. As of 1982, the RPAA was chartered as a 501(c)(3) charity organization. From 1981 to 1990, the event was held in the parking lot of the ESSO Club, but it eventually outgrew the available space there.
