EMS Prize
The European Mathematical Society (EMS) is a European organization dedicated to the development of mathematics in Europe. Its members are different mathematical societies in Europe, academic institutions and individual mathematicians. The current president is Volker Mehrmann, professor at the Institute for Mathematics at the Technical University of Berlin. Goals The Society seeks to serve all kinds of mathematicians in universities, research institutes and other forms of higher education. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon
Jean-Pierre Bourguignon (born 21 July 1947) is a French mathematician, working in the field of differential geometry. Biography Born in Lyon, he studied at École Polytechnique in Palaiseau, graduating in 1969. For his graduate studies he went to Paris Diderot University, where he obtained his PhD in 1974 under the direction of Marcel Berger. He was president of the Société Mathématique de France from 1990 to 1992. From 1995 to 1998, he was president of the European Mathematical Society. He was director of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques near Paris from 1994 to 2013. Between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2019 he was the President of the European Research Council. Alexander Goncharov
Alexander B. Goncharov (born April 7, 1960) is a Soviet American mathematician and the Philip Schuyler Beebe Professor of Mathematics at Yale University. He won the EMS Prize in 1992. Goncharov won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1976. He attained his doctorate at Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1987, under supervision of Israel Gelfand with thesis ''Generalized conformal structures on manifolds''. Goncharov was an Invited Speaker at the 1994 International Congress of Mathematicians and gave a talk ''Polylogarithms in arithmetic and geometry''. In 2019, Goncharov was appointed the Philip Schuyler Beebe Professor of Mathematics at Yale University, as well as the Gretchen and Barry Mazur Chair at the Institut des hautes études scientifiques. Jens Franke
Jens Franke (born 28 June 1964) is a German mathematician. He has held a chair at the University of Bonn's Hausdorff Center for Mathematics since 1992. Franke's research has covered various problems of number theory, algebraic geometry and analysis on locally symmetric spaces. Franke attended the University of Jena, where he earned his PhD under Hans Triebel in 1986. He was awarded the EMS Prize in 1992, and the Oberwolfach Prize in 1993. In recent years, Franke worked on an implementation of the Number Field Sieve algorithm for prime decomposition. Richard Borcherds
Richard Ewen Borcherds (; born 29 November 1959) is a British mathematician currently working in quantum field theory. He is known for his work in lattices, group theory, and infinite-dimensional algebras, for which he was awarded the Fields Medal in 1998. Early life Borcherds was born in Cape Town, South Africa, but the family moved to Birmingham in the United Kingdom when he was six months old. Education Borcherds was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham, and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied under John Horton Conway. Fields Medal
The Fields Medal is a prize awarded to two, three, or four mathematicians under 40 years of age at the International Congress of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), a meeting that takes place every four years. The name of the award honours the Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields. The Fields Medal is regarded as one of the highest honors a mathematician can receive, and has been described as the Nobel Prize of Mathematics, although there are several major differences, including frequency of award, number of awards, age limits, monetary value, and award criteria. Jan Philip Solovej (born 14 June 1961) is a Danish mathematician and mathematical physicist working on the mathematical theory of quantum mechanics. He is a professor at University of Copenhagen. Biography Solovej obtained his Ph.D. in 1989 from Princeton University with the thesis on "Universality in the Thomas-Fermi-von Weizsäcker Model of Atoms and Molecules" supervised by Elliott H. Lieb. Pavel Exner
Pavel Exner (born 30 March 1946 in Prague) is a Czech mathematical physicist. Life Born on March 30, 1946, in Prague, his parents were Vilem Exner, economist, and Marie, born Karvankova, ophthalmologist. He graduated in 1969 in theoretical physics from the Charles University in Prague. After working at the Charles University as an assistant professor, he moved in 1978 to the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna in Russia. Due to peculiarities of the time he had no doctoral advisor and got his PhD only in 1983; still in Dubna he also got the higher doctorate in mathematical physics in 1990. Back to his home country in 1991 he became head of a mathematical-physics group in the Nuclear Physics Institute AS CR of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Marta Sanz-Solé
Marta Sanz-Solé (born 19 January 1952 in Sabadell, Barcelona) is a Catalan mathematician specializing in probability theory. She obtained her PhD in 1978 from the University of Barcelona under the supervision of David Nualart. Career Sanz-Solé is professor at the University of Barcelona, and head of the research group on stochastic processes. Prior to taking up her post at the UB, she was associate professor at the University Autònoma of Barcelona. She was Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics UB from 1993-1996, and Vice-president of the Division of Experimental Sciences and Mathematics from 2000-2003.
