The EMD F45 is a AAR wheel arrangement#C-C, C-C cowl unit, cowled diesel-electric locomotive built by Electro-Motive Diesel, General Motors Electro-Motive Division between 1968 and 1971. Power was provided by an EMD 645E3 20-cylinder (engine), cylinder engine which generated . Design After sponsoring the development of the EMD FP45, FP45 passenger locomotive, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, Santa Fe requested a similar freight locomotive from Electro-Motive Diesel, Electro-Motive. Where the FP45 was an EMD SDP45, SDP45 wrapped in a full-width cowl carbody, the new F45 was essentially an EMD SD45, SD45 given the same treatment. Montana Rail Link is a privately held Class II railroad in the United States. It operates on trackage originally built by the Northern Pacific Railway and leased from its successor BNSF. MRL is a unit of The Washington Companies and is headquartered in Missoula, Montana. The railroad runs between Huntley, Montana and Spokane, Washington, largely within Montana, and the main line passes through the towns of Missoula, Livingston, Bozeman, Billings, and Helena. Montana Rail Link connects with the BNSF on both ends and also in Garrison, Montana. The railroad has over of track, serves 100 stations, and employs approximately 1,000 personnel. EMD SDP45
The SDP45 is a six-axle, C-C, diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division of La Grange, Illinois. It was a passenger-hauling version of the SD45 on a stretched locomotive frame with an extended, squared-off long hood at the rear, aft of the radiators, giving space for a steam generator for passenger train heating. This steam generator placement followed the pattern set by the SDP35 and SDP40. Original owners The Southern Pacific Railroad ordered their ten on May 9, 1966, with the units being placed in service between May 24 and July 26, 1967, initially on the '' City of San Francisco'' between Oakland and Ogden, and eventually used system-wide. The passenger locomotives derivatives of the General Motors EMD GP40 diesel-electric locomotive have been, and continue to be, used by multiple passenger railroads in North America. For passenger service, the locomotives required extra components for providing steam or head-end power (HEP) for heating, lighting and electricity in passenger cars. Most of these passenger locomotives were rebuilt from older freight locomotives, while some were built as brand new models. GP40TC The GMD GP40TC was built by General Motors Diesel (GMD), for GO Transit in Toronto. Eight units were manufactured between 1966 and 1968. They were built on an enlarged frame to accommodate a head-end power generator. GO Transit sold the fleet to Amtrak in 1988, where they were based in Chicago and used on short-haul trains. The GP40 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between November 1965 and December 1971. It has an EMD 645E3 16-cylinder engine generating . The GP40 is longer than its EMD 567D3A-engined predecessor, the GP35, and distinguished visually by its three 48-inch radiator fans at the rear of the long hood, while the GP35 has two large fans and a smaller one in between. It was built on a frame; the GP35 was built on a frame - as was the GP7, 9, 18, and 30. MPXpress is a series of diesel-electric passenger train locomotives designed for commuter rail service. The locomotives are built by MotivePower, a subsidiary of Wabtec. To date, MPI has offered five main variants: MP36PH-3S, MP36PH-3C, MP40PH-3C, MP32PH-Q, and MP54AC. However, due to federal emissions standards, the MP54AC is the only locomotive currently for sale in the United States, as it is the only MPXpress locomotive that meets Tier 4 standards. The MPXpress line of locomotives were the first production passenger locomotives to meet FRA safety regulations regarding crashworthiness and fire safety.
