Elaine Stewart (born Elsy Henrietta Maria Steinberg; May 31, 1930 – June 27, 2011) was an American actress and model. Life Stewart was born in Montclair, New Jersey, the daughter of Hedwig (Haenssler) and Ulrich E. Steinberg. She was one of five children born to Jewish immigrants. Her father was a police sergeant. She was a teenager when she signed a contract with the Conover modeling agency and changed her name. Soon after, the movie producer Hal Wallis offered her $200 a week to play a nurse in the Dean Martin-Jerry Lewis comedy ''Sailor Beware''. Stewart beat out hundreds of young models in 1952 to earn a photo layout in ''See Magazine'', winning the title of “Miss See.” Stewart was a Democrat who was supportive of Adlai Stevenson's campaign during the 1952 presidential election. Elsy Florence Eva Borders, née Kreher, (14 January 1905 – 14 August 1971) was a campaigner for Building code, building standards who led a large mortgage strike in England in the 1930s. Early life Elsy Kreher was born in 1905, in Lambeth, the daughter of John Engelbert Kreher and Edith Eliza Morley Kreher. Her father was a waiter. Career In 1937, Elsy Borders and her husband withheld payments and sued the building society that held the mortgage on their newly built semi-detached house on the Coney Hall estate near West Wickham in Kent, for misrepresenting the house's "slap-dash" workmanship. She studied law at the London School of Economics, in order to represent herself in court in 1938. Elsy Jacobs (4 March 1933 – 27 February 1998) was a Luxembourgish road bicycle racer. She became the first ever women's Road World Champion when she won the inaugural race on 30 August 1958. Later the same year she broke the women's hour record on 9 November, riding 41,347 m on the Vigorelli velodrome in Milan; the record stood for 14 years. Biography Born in Garnich, Luxembourg, Elsy Jacobs was one of many children; three of her brothers were also racing cyclists, Roger, Raymond and Edmond Jacobs (who competed in the Tour de France). Both a sports centre and hall were named in her honour. The Grand Prix Elsy Jacobs was established and is based in her home town of Garnich.
