ECAC Hockey Player Of The Year
The ECAC Hockey Player of the Year is an annual award given out at the conclusion of the ECAC Hockey regular season to the best player in the conference as voted by the coaches of each ECAC team. The Player of the Year was first awarded in 1962 and every year thereafter. ECAC Hockey
ECAC Hockey is one of the six conferences that compete in NCAA Division I ice hockey. The conference used to be affiliated with the Eastern College Athletic Conference, a consortium of over 300 colleges in the eastern United States. This relationship ended in 2004; however, the ECAC abbreviation was retained in the name of the hockey conference. ECAC Hockey is the only ice hockey conference with identical memberships in both its women's and men's divisions. Cornell has won the most ECAC men's hockey championships with 12, followed by Harvard at 11. History ECAC Hockey was founded in 1961 as a loose association of college hockey teams in the Northeast. Brown Bears Men's Ice Hockey
The Brown Bears men's ice hockey team is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college ice hockey program that represents Brown University. The Bears are a member of ECAC Hockey. They play at the Meehan Auditorium in Providence, Rhode Island. History The men's ice hockey team at Brown is one of the country's oldest programs, having played their first game in 1898. That season, the team helped to form the first informal conference, the Intercollegiate Hockey Association, and wound up winning the league championship. While there was no formal declaration at the time, Brown's title is sometimes referred to as the first ice hockey national championship. Forward (ice Hockey)
In ice hockey, a forward is a player, and a position on the ice, whose primary responsibility is to score and assist goals. Generally, the forwards try to stay in three different lanes of the ice going from goal to goal. It is not mandatory, however, to stay in a lane. Staying in a lane aids in forming the common offensive strategy known as a triangle. One forward obtains the puck and then the forwards pass it between themselves making the goalie move side to side. This strategy opens up the net for scoring opportunities. This strategy allows for a constant flow of the play, attempting to maintain the control of play by one team in the offensive zone. The forwards can pass to the defence players playing at the blue line, thus freeing up the play and allowing either a shot from the point (blue line position where the defence stands) or a pass back to the offence. Wayne Small
F. Wayne Small is a Canadian retired ice hockey winger who was an All-American for Brown. Career Small's stature mirrored his name. Standing at 5' 8" and weighing less than 150 lbs., he was too slight for most teams and relegated to playing junior B hockey. Despite this, Small was recruited to Brown University and played with the freshman team while the varsity club reached the NCAA tournament. Small played well as a junior, helping the team to a 4th-place finish in the conference while scoring more than a point per game but it was during his junior year that he became the team's star. While the team sank in the standings, finishing 8th in 1967, Small nearly doubled his point total, scoring 61 in just 24 games. Small contributed on over 45% of Brown's goals that season and led the nation in scoring with 35 goals. Small's numbers declined in his senior season but he still led the Bears with 50 points. Cornell Big Red Men's Ice Hockey
The Cornell Big Red men's ice hockey team is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college ice hockey program that represents Cornell University. Cornell competes in the ECAC Hockey conference and plays its home games at Lynah Rink in Ithaca, New York. Six of the eight Ivy League schools sponsor men's hockey and all six teams play in the 12-team ECAC. The Ivy League crowns a champion based on the results of the games played between its members during the ECAC season. Cornell has won the ECAC Championship a record 12 times and has won the Ivy League Title 24 times (20 outright, four tied), second to Harvard's 25 (21 outright, four tied). Doug Ferguson (ice Hockey)
Douglas R. Ferguson was a Canadian ice hockey Center who was a two-time All-American for Cornell and helped the team win its first NCAA Championship. Career Ferguson was a prominent junior player for the Melville Millionaires, along his twin brother Dave, in 1963. That summer, Ned Harkness had become the new head coach for Cornell and sought to build a program that could win an national title. He sold his vision to the Ferguson brothers and the pair, with younger brother Bob, all became members of Harkness' first recruiting class for the Big Red. Harkness had already won a championship with RPI in 1954 and there was hope he could replicate that success in Ithaca. Doug, as most players did, sat out his freshman season due to the then-NCAA regulations limiting students to 3 years of varsity play. Clarkson Golden Knights Men's Ice Hockey
The Clarkson Golden Knights men's ice hockey team is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college ice hockey program that represents Clarkson University. The Golden Knights have been a member of ECAC Hockey since 1962, and play their home games at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, New York. While Clarkson lore has it that their first hockey game was played in 1916 against the Hogansburg Indians, the team was established as a hockey club in 1921, led by captain Bill Johnson. The Knights won their opening encounter against Alexandria Bay, 6–4, and finished the year with a 2–1 record, their first of many winning seasons. Goaltender
In ice hockey, the goaltender (commonly referred to as the goalie) is the player responsible for preventing the hockey puck from entering their team's net, thus preventing the opposing team from scoring. The goaltender mostly plays in or near the area in front of the net called the ''Ice hockey rink#Crease, goal crease'' (often referred to simply as '' the crease''). Goaltenders tend to stay at or beyond the top of the crease to cut down on the angle of shots. In the modern age of goaltending there are two common styles, butterfly and hybrid (hybrid is a mix of the traditional stand-up style and butterfly technique). Terry Yurkiewicz
Terrance A. Yurkiewicz was a Canadian ice hockey goaltender who was a two-time All-American for Clarkson. Career Yurkiewicz joined the varsity team at Clarkson University in 1963 but a broken finger curtailed his first season. After he recovered he became the starting goaltender and led Clarkson to a third-place finish in ECAC Hockey. He was named to both the All-American and Second Team All-ECAC rosters. Clarkson finished the ECAC Tournament in fourth place and, despite the disappointing result, Yurkiewicz was named as the best goaltender of the tournament. He was named as an alternate captain for his senior season and Yurkiewicz led Clarkson to one of the best seasons in program history.
