Eyre & Munro was an architectural partnership in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. A number of their works are now heritage-listed. History Walter Morris Eyre was an architect, engineer and surveyor. He was born in 1858 and trained in England. He was immigrated to Queensland and in 1880 was appointed as the first Shire Clerk and Superintendent of Works for the Toowong Shire Council. He worked in the office of his cousin, Francis Drummond Greville Stanley, from 1881 until he was appointed City Engineer of Townsville in 1885. In 1887 he left to set up in practice as an architect and soon gained enough work to take on William Henry Allan Munro as a junior partner. William Henry Allan Munro was born in Inverness, Scotland in 1856 and trained under Matthews & Lawrie. Townsville is a city on the north-eastern coast of Queensland, Australia. Cooktown is a coastal town and locality in the Shire of Cook, Queensland, Australia. History Holy Trinity church was built in 1889 to serve the Anglican community in the rapidly developing mining town of Herberton and in the surrounding district. Herberton developed following the 1880 discovery of a substantial tin reef in its vicinity. A rush followed almost immediately and by August 1880, when the town of Herberton (named because of its proximity to the Wild River, the head of the Herbert River) was laid out, it already had a hotel, a butcher's shop, and three stores. Rooney Brothers was an architecture and constructions business operated by brothers John, Jacob and Matthew Rooney in Queensland, Australia. They dominated the North Queensland building industry until the early years of the 20th century. History In the late 1860s, Irish immigrants John and Jacob Rooney had established a building and timber-milling business at Maryborough, where later they were joined by their brother Matthew. William Henry Allan Munro
William Henry Allan Munro (1856 – 23 February 1913) was an architect in Queensland, Australia. Some of his works are now heritage-listed. Early life Munro was born in Inverness, Scotland, in 1856, the son of tailor George Munro and his wife Mary (' Allan). He trained under Matthews & Lawrie. Architectural career In 1886, he emigrated to Queensland and worked as an architect for Rooney Brothers of Townsville. There, he won the competition for the Queensland Hotel and was taken into partnership by Walter Eyre in 1887. After the firm ceased trading in 1892, Munro worked for the government but also undertook private contracts. Death Munro died on 23 February 1913 in Brisbane. The following day, he was interred at the South Brisbane Cemetery.
