Eyewitness (1999 Film)
''Eyewitness'' is a 1999 American short documentary film directed by Bert Van Bork. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short. The explored the lives of three artists forced to work in secret while living in Nazi death camps: Jan Komski, Dinah Gottliebova and Felix Nussbaum, and who witnessed and painted the horrors of the Holocaust. Bert Van Bork
Bert Van Bork (1928–October 29, 2014) was a German-born producer, director, cinematographer, still photographer, painter, and printer. He studied fine arts in Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, and later moved to Chicago where he shot and directed instructional films for companies such as Encyclopædia Britannica Films and Physical Science Study Committee. Early life Van Bork was born in Augustusburg, Saxony, Germany. At the age of fifteen, Bert won a competition to study at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin. There Van Bork attended classes taught by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, one of the four founders of the German Expressionist art group “Die Brücke”. Following the second World War Van Bork continued his studies at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig as well as Dresden. The Holocaust
The Holocaust, also known as the Shoah, was the genocide of European Jews during World War II. Between 1941 and 1945, Nazi Germany and its collaborators systematically murdered some six million Jews across German-occupied Europe; around two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population. Felix Nussbaum
Felix Nussbaum (December 11, 1904 – August 9, 1944) was a German Jews, German-Jewish surrealist Painting, painter. Nussbaum’s work gives insights into the essence of one person among the victims of the Holocaust. Early life and education Nussbaum was born in Osnabrück, Germany, to parents Rahel and Philipp Nussbaum. His father was a World War I veteran and Germany, German patriot before the rise of the Nazis. He was an amateur painter when he was younger, but was forced to pursue other means of work for financial reasons. Because of this, he is said to have encouraged his son to pursue art as a profession. Nussbaum was a lifelong student, beginning his formal studies in 1920 in Hamburg and Berlin, and continuing as long as the contemporary political situation allowed him. In his earlier works, Nussbaum was heavily influenced by Vincent van Gogh and Henri Rousseau, and he eventually paid homage to Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà as well. Dinah Gottliebova
Annemarie Dina Babbitt (née Gottliebová; January 21, 1923 – July 29, 2009) was an artist and Holocaust survivor. A naturalized U.S. citizen, she resided in Santa Cruz, California. As Dina Gottliebová, she was imprisoned at Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II, where she drew portraits of Romani inmates for the infamous Josef Mengele. Following the liberation of the camp and the end of the war, she emigrated to the United States and became an animator. At the time of her death, she had been fighting the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum for the return of her paintings. She was featured alongside fellow concentration camp survivors and artists Jan Komski and Felix Nussbaum in the 1999 documentary film '' Eyewitness'', which was nominated for an Academy Award for Documentary Short Subject.
