Executive Council Of The Falkland Islands
The Executive Council of the Falkland Islands is the policy making body of the Government of the Falkland Islands, exercising executive power by advising the Governor. It has an equivalent role to that of the Privy Council in the United Kingdom. The first Executive Council for the Falklands was inaugurated on 2 April 1845 by Governor Richard Moody. Powers The powers, function, membership and tenure of the Executive Council is prescribed in Chapter V of the Falkland Islands Constitution, which came into force on 1 January 2009. The executive authority of the Falkland Islands is vested in the King, and that authority is exercised on his behalf by the Governor of the Falkland Islands, who acts on the advice of the Executive Council. Military Of The Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands are a British overseas territory and, as such, rely on the United Kingdom for the guarantee of their security. The other UK territories in the South Atlantic, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, fall under the protection of British Forces South Atlantic Islands (BFSAI), formerly known as British Forces Falkland Islands (BFFI), which includes commitments from the British Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy. They are headed by the Commander, British Forces South Atlantic Islands (CBFSAI), a brigadier-equivalent appointment that rotates among all three services (Navy, British Army, and RAF). Roger Anthony Edwards
Roger Edwards (born 1946) is a former Royal Marine who has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Camp constituency since the 2009 general election, winning re-election in 2013 and 2017. He was previously a Member of the Legislative Council from 2001–2005 and is the father of former MLA Emma Edwards. Edwards joined the Royal Marines in 1963, but transferred to the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm in September 1965, before going on to the Britannia Royal Naval College during which time he trained to be a pilot at RAF Linton-on-Ouse. Jan Cheek
Janet Lynda Cheek (née Biggs; born 1948) is a Falkland Islands politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Stanley constituency from 2009 to 2017. Cheek won re-election in 2013 but stepped down from the assembly at the 2017 election. She was previously a Member of the Legislative Council from 1997 to 2005. Jan Cheek was born in Stanley and spent much of her childhood in South Georgia. For her A-Levels she was awarded a government scholarship to a study at a grammar school in Dorset. Cheek worked as a Secondary School English teacher from 1969 until 1989. She then moved to Fortuna Ltd. where she rose to become co-owner and director until her retirement in 2008. Michael Poole (politician)
Michael Poole (born 4 October 1984) is a British, Falkland Islands politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Stanley constituency from 2013 to 2017. Poole was the first member of the Legislative Assembly to have been born after the Falklands War. Prior to his election Poole was a Senior Economist and Statistical Analyst in the Policy Unit of the Falkland Islands Government. He had previously worked as a manager in the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Stanley and was a representative of a fishing industry association. In 2012 Poole travelled with a group of young islanders to promote the Falkland Islanders' right to self-determination at a meeting of the Special Committee on Decolonization in New York City and later at the Commonwealth Youth Parliament in London. Phyllis Rendell
Phyllis Mary Rendell (née Oliver) is a Falkland Islands politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Camp constituency from 2013 to 2017. Rendell was born Phyllis Mary Oliver to farmer John Oliver in the Falkland Islands and attended Darwin Boarding School before completing her education in Derbyshire, going on to study at Goldsmiths, University of London. She qualified as a teacher in the UK and returned to the Falklands to work in Stanley as a teacher. In the 1970s, she met and married Mike Rendell, who was stationed in the Falklands as part of Naval Party 8901. After working for six years in Saudi Arabia, Rendell returned to the Falklands in 1982 shortly after the end of the war.
