Everybody's Sweetheart (1920 Film)
''Everybody's Sweetheart'' is a 1920 American silent comedy-drama film directed by Laurence Trimble and Alan Crosland and written by John Lynch. The film stars Olive Thomas and William Collier, Jr. ''Everybody's Sweetheart'' was Thomas' final film role and was released nearly a month after her death from acute nephritis (due to accidental ingestion of mercury bichloride) in Paris on September 10, 1920. A copy of ''Everybody's Sweetheart'' is preserved in the George Eastman House Motion Picture Collection. Plot As described in a film magazine, Mary (Thomas) and John (Collier), residents of the county poor farm, have had their lots cast there by a train wreck from which they were taken as babies and the identity of their parents lost. The two are the closest of friends and Mary is everybody's sweetheart about the place. Laurence Trimble
Laurence Norwood Trimble (February 15, 1885 – February 8, 1954) was an American silent film film director, director, screenwriter, writer and actor. Trimble began his film career directing Jean (dog), Jean, the Vitagraph Dog, the first canine to have a leading role in motion pictures. He made his acting debut in the 1910 silent ''Saved by the Flag'', directed scores of films for Vitagraph Studios, Vitagraph and other studios, and became head of production for Florence Turner's independent film company in England (1913–1916). Trimble was most widely known for his four films starring Strongheart, a German Shepherd dog he discovered and trained that became the first major canine film star. After he left filmmaking he trained animals exclusively, particularly guide dogs for the blind. Biography Laurence Norwood Trimble was born on February 15, 1885 in Robbinston, Maine. Martha Mattox
Martha Mattox (June 19, 1879 – May 2, 1933) was an American silent film actress most notable for her role of Mammy Pleasant in the 1927 film '' The Cat and the Canary''. She also played a role in ''Torrent'' (1926). She died from a heart ailment at age 53. Biography Born in Natchez, Mississippi, Mattox attended East Mississippi College, where she studied dramatic art. A 1923 article in the ''Calgary Herald'' newspaper described her as "a full-blooded Creole", of Spanish descent on her father's side and French on her mother's. Her initial acting was on stage, including performances with the Marion Leonard Company. After working on stage, she began performing in films, initially in Westerns and action films and later in melodramas and comedies. Her film debut came in 1915, and she played a variety of roles in the silent-film era. Aileen Manning
Aileen Manning (January 20, 1886 – March 25, 1946) was an American film actress. Manning was in demand as a character actress in silent films. She was known for her roles in silent and early talkie films, including ''Uncle Tom's Cabin'' (1927) and ''Huckleberry Finn'' (1931). About her performance in '' Everybody's Sweetheart'' (1920), ''Variety'' wrote that she "makes the character necessarily disagreeable, but true to life". She played Queen Anne in '' A Lady of Quality'' (1924); it was noted that she bore a resemblance to the character she was playing. She played another queen, Elizabeth I, in the MGM short '' The Virgin Queen'' (1928). Manning lived at Hollywood-by-the-Sea. She died on March 25, 1946 in Hollywood.
