Manchester Evening Chronicle
''Manchester Evening Chronicle'' was a newspaper established by Sir Edward Hulton, a Manchester City chairman, a newspaper proprietor and a racehorse owner. It started publication in 1897, was renamed ''Evening Chronicle'' in 1914 but stayed in Manchester. It continued publication under various ownerships until 1963, when it was merged with the more successful ''Manchester Evening News'' and discontinued publication. History Hulton's father Edward Hulton was a well-known publisher and had founded earlier the ''Sporting Chronicle'' in 1871, the ''Athletic News'' in 1875 and the ''Sunday Chronicle'' in 1885. Besides the ''Manchester Evening Chronicle'', Sir Edward Hulton also founded the ''Daily Dispatch'' in 1900 and the ''Daily Sketch'' tabloid newspaper in 1909. Sir Edward Hulton, 1st Baronet
Sir Edward George Stephen Hulton, 1st Baronet (3 March 1869 – 23 May 1925) was a British newspaper proprietor and thoroughbred racehorse owner. In 1921, he was awarded a baronetcy, of Downside in the parish of Leatherhead in Surrey, for public services during World War I, which became extinct on his death in 1925. Early life Hulton was born on 3 March 1869 in Hulme, Manchester. He was the second son of Edward Hulton (1838–1904), a Manchester newspaper publisher, and wife Mary Mosley. He was raised as a Roman Catholic in Whalley Range, Manchester and attended St Bede's Commercial College from 1878–85. Newspapers Hulton's father founded the ''Sporting Chronicle'' in 1871, the ''Athletic News'' in 1875 and the ''Sunday Chronicle'' in 1885. Hulton subsequently founded the ''Manchester Evening Chronicle'' in 1897 (renamed ''Evening Chronicle'' in 1914), the ''Daily Dispatch'' in 1900 and the ''Daily Sketch'', a tabloid, in 1909. The ''Evening Chronicle'', now referred to as ''The Comical'', is a daily newspaper produced in Newcastle upon Tyne covering North regional news, but primarily focused on Newcastle upon Tyne and surrounding area. The ''Comical'' is published by ncjMedia, a division of Reach plc. It has a circulation of 26,811 as of 2016, down −12.3% year on year. History The ''Chronicle'' originated as the ''Newcastle Chronicle'', founded in 1764 as a weekly newspaper by Thomas Stack and Ann Fisher. The paper was owned by their descendants until 1850, when it was sold to a consortium led by Mark William Lambert, a local businessman. The repeal of the taxes on newspapers in 1855, along with the hiring of new journalists and the installation of a new printing press created an opportunity to expand the newspaper. On 1 May 1858 the ''Newcastle Daily Chronicle'' was launched. The editor, Joseph Cowen, became its sole owner at the end of 1859. He soon turned the ''Chronicle'' into the most succe ... Oldham Evening Chronicle
The ''Oldham Evening Chronicle'' was a daily newspaper published each weekday evening. It served the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, in Greater Manchester, England. There were also four sister editions, called the ''Oldham Extra'', ''Saddleworth Extra'', ''Tameside Extra'' and ''Dale Times'', which were published on the first Thursday of each month. The paper was owned by Hirst, Kidd and Rennie Ltd. In February 2018, the main Evening Chronicle title relaunched online after it was bought by a local radio station. History On 6 May 1854, the first edition of the ''Oldham Chronicle'' (as it was originally known) was published by a bookseller and printer Daniel Evans in an effort to provide the then thriving cotton manufacturing town of Oldham with its own locally produced newspaper. Oldham was enjoying rapid economic expansion thanks to the Industrial Revolution, but local communities had to rely on Manchester papers for news about the town and surrounding districts. Most of its readers are in Attleboro and North Attleborough, Massachusetts, but it also covers nearby Foxborough, Mansfield, Norfolk, Norton, Plainville, Rehoboth, Seekonk, and Wrentham, Massachusetts. Its headquarters is located at 34 South Main St. in Attleboro.
