Sonny Gallant
Stanley "Sonny" Gallant (born March 27, 1956) is a Canadian politician who served as interim leader of the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party from 2019 to 2022. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island in the 2007 provincial election. He represents the electoral district of Evangeline-Miscouche and is a member of the Liberal Party. Wilfred Arsenault
Joseph Wilfred Arsenault (November 22, 1953 – July 27, 2011) was a political figure on Prince Edward Island, Canada. He represented Evangeline-Miscouche in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 2000 to 2007 as a Progressive Conservative member. He was born in St. Nicholas, Prince Edward Island, the son of Euclide Arsenault and Julie Ann Poirier. He was educated at the Institute of Canadian Bankers and was employed as an assistant bank manager before entering politics. In 1990, Arsenault married Emily Duffy. He was defeated by Sonny Gallant when he ran for reelection in 2007. Arsenault lived in Summerside from 1984 until 2003 when he moved to Miscouche. In 2007, Arsenault entered the race to become the Conservative candidate in the federal riding of Egmont, but lost to Gail Shea. 2003 Prince Edward Island General Election
The 2003 Prince Edward Island general election was held on September 29, 2003 to elect the 27 members of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. The election was called on September 2 by Premier Pat Binns, who enjoyed a high level of popularity among voters. Polling took place on September 29, despite a blackout across two-thirds of the province and other damage caused by Hurricane Juan. Binns' Progressive Conservatives were elected to a third consecutive majority government, the first time this had happened in Island history (for the PC party). The Premier, who ran in Murray River-Gaspereaux, was re-elected, along with his entire existing cabinet. The Liberals wrested three seats from the Tories, increasing their standing to four seats. 2019 Prince Edward Island General Election
The 2019 Prince Edward Island general election was held to elect the members of the 66th General Assembly of Prince Edward Island. The vote in 26 of the 27 districts was held on 23 April 2019, while the vote for the member from Charlottetown-Hillsborough Park was deferred to 15 July due to the death of the Green Party's candidate. However, Charlottetown-Hillsborough Park still voted in a referendum on electoral reform. Natalie Jameson won the deferred election in the riding. The Progressive Conservatives under new leader Dennis King won thirteen seats (including deferred seat) to form a minority government. The Greens under leader Peter Bevan-Baker won eight seats to form the Opposition. The Liberals under Premier Wade MacLauchlan were reduced to six seats and MacLauchlan lost in his own district. 1996 Prince Edward Island General Election
The 1996 Prince Edward Island general election was held on November 18, 1996. It was the first election in the province's history to not use multi-member constituencies, and instead elect a single member in each of 27 districts. (Previously, since 1873 the province had been divided into 15 or 16 districts, each electing two members.) The governing Liberals of Premier Keith Milligan, who had been in power since Joe Ghiz first won government in 1986, lost to the resurgent Progressive Conservatives under their new leader, Pat Binns. This was also the first election where a party other than the Liberals or Tories won a seat in the Legislature, with New Democratic Party leader Herb Dickieson winning a three-way race in a Prince County riding. The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party (officially the ''Prince Edward Island Liberal Association'') is a political party in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The PEI Liberals are affiliated with the federal Liberal Party of Canada. History The party was created when PEI was a British colony by reformers who agitated for the system of responsible government. This was granted by the British crown to the colony in 1851. The 2000 Prince Edward Island general election was held on April 17, 2000 to elect the 27 members of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. Premier Pat Binns' Progressive Conservative Party was elected to its second straight majority, winning every seat but one. This was an increase of eight seats from the previous election. The Liberal Party, led by rookie leader Wayne Carew, only won one seat, and Carew lost his own by a substantial margin. 2007 Prince Edward Island General Election
The 2007 Prince Edward Island general election was held on May 28, 2007. It elected members of the Legislative Assembly of the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The incumbent Progressive Conservative government was defeated by the Liberal opposition after holding power for eleven years. The newly formed Green Party captured 3.04% of the vote or 4.44% in ridings they contested, beating out the New Democratic Party for third place. The New Democrats fell to 1.96% or 3.43% in ridings contested. They captured 3.06% of the vote, or 3.48% in the 24 of the 27 ridings they contested in the 2003 election. 2011 Prince Edward Island General Election
The 2011 Prince Edward Island general election was held on October 3, 2011. The Liberal government of Premier Robert Ghiz was elected to a second majority government, winning one seat less than they did in 2007. Ghiz himself considered 18 seats to be a marker for a strong majority. He won 22. Health care was an important issue during the election, especially in rural areas. The Progressive Conservatives retained their position as Official Opposition, winning five seats. Olive Crane used the issue of the Provincial Nominee Program during the election, as well as issues surrounding immigration and investments that came under investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Federal Minister Jason Kenney during the election.
