Evan Welling Thomas III (born April 25, 1951) is an American journalist, historian, and author. He is the author of nine books, including two ''New York Times'' bestsellers. Early life and career Thomas was born in Huntington, New York, and raised in nearby Cold Spring Harbor. A graduate of Phillips Academy, Harvard University (B.A.), and the University of Virginia School of Law ( J.D.), from 1991 he was a reporter, writer, and editor at ''Newsweek'' for 24 years. Prior to that, he was at ''Time''. Thomas began his reporting career at ''The Bergen Record'' in northeastern New Jersey. In 1992, DCI Robert Gates granted Thomas historical access to view classified Central Intelligence Agency files. The fundamental authority for this policy is Executive Order 12356 (April 1982), as implemented in HR 10–24(c)4. Evan Thomas (February 17, 1891 – 1982), also known as Peter Evan Thomas was a Canadian-born British character actor, whose career spanned both the silent and sound film eras. He began his career in England, in ''Lady Windermere's Fan'', written by Oscar Wilde. Born Elystan Owen Evan Thomas in Vancouver, he appeared in silent films in Great Britain. He worked in both Hollywood and England beginning in 1930, before returning permanently to the British film industry after 1946. Over his fifty-year career, he would appear in dozens of films, usually in small roles, although he did have several featured performances, as in 1928's ''Warned Off'', and 1935's ''Lend Me Your Husband''. Evan Lorimer Thomas (21 February 1872 – 9 April 1953) was a Welsh clergyman and Professor of Welsh at St David's College, Lampeter University of Wales, Lampeter ( cy, Prifysgol Cymru, Llanbedr Pont Steffan) was a university in Lampeter, Wales. Founded in 1822, and incorporated by royal charter in 1828, it was the oldest degree awarding institution in Wales, with limited ... Evan Thomas (inventor)
Evan Thomas (died after 1881) was a Welsh ironmonger who became an inventor and manufacturer of safety lamps for miners. He was the original proprietor of the Cambrian Lamp Works, established in Aberdare in 1860. In 1867, Thomas patented an improvement to the design of the safety lamp that would prevent the glass in the lamp from becoming loose by using india rubber. In 1868, he obtained a patent for "an improvement in the construction of miners' safety lamps, in such a manner as to enable petroleum or other mineral oils to be consumed therein". Thomas's best-selling lamp, the "no. 7", improved on a lamp invented in 1816 by William Reid Clanny, and was successful in passing tests set in 1886 by the Royal Commission on Accidents in Mines; it was selected as one of the four recommended types of lamp. Evan Kyffin Thomas (1866 – 27 July 1935) was an editor and newspaper proprietor in South Australia. History Thomas was a son of William Kyffin Thomas and grandson of Robert Thomas and followed in their footsteps in the newspaper business. Evan Thomas, Radcliffe and Company was one of the more prosperous and better-known of Cardiff-based shipowning companies, established in 1882 by a Ceredigion sea captain, Evan Thomas, and a Merthyr Tydfil businessman, Henry Radcliffe. Until 1939 one of the main trades of the company was to carry Wales, Welsh steam coal, which reached its peak in the years immediately before World War I. The company was ceased trading in the 1980s.
