Evan James (poet)
Evan James (also known by the bardic name ''Ieuan ap Iago'') (18 January 1809 – 30 September 1878), was a weaver and poet from Pontypridd, originally from Caerphilly, Wales, who wrote the lyrics of ''Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau'' ("Land of my Fathers"), the national anthem of Wales. James, a weaver by trade, employed several people at his mill on the bank of the River Rhondda. According to family legend, his son James James, was walking one day in January 1856 on the banks of the river when the melody for ''Hen Wlad fy Nhadau'' came to him. When he gave the tune to his father, Evan James was able to compose the words which are the present-day Welsh national anthem. It is likely that James senior was inspired by the fact that two of his brothers had emigrated to the United States and had written in praise of their adoptive country and urging him to join them. Evan James (rugby)
Evan James (1869 – 18 August 1901) was a Welsh rugby half back who played club rugby for Swansea under the rugby union code, and professional rugby league for Broughton Rangers. While playing with Swansea, James was paired with his brother, David, and together they were nicknamed the 'Swansea gems' and the 'Curly haired marmosets'. The brothers were the centre of a controversial move to the league game in 1892 and switched codes twice in their careers. He had three younger brothers, Claude, Sam and Willie, the latter two playing at the same level as David and Evan towards the end of their careers. Rugby career James was first capped for Wales on 1 February 1890 in a match against Scotland, which was more notable for being the début game for Swansea team-mate and Wales legend Billy Bancroft. Sir Henry Evan Murchison James (20 January 1846 – 20 August 1923) was a British civil servant in the Indian Civil Service from 1865 to 1900. He was the Commissioner in Sind from 1891 to 1900. Official duties He formally opened Dayaram Jethmal Sind College on 15 October 1893 in Karachi. After stepping down as Commissioner, he was knighted as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE) in the 1901 New Year Honours List. Travel to China In 1886–1887, James used a two-year leave to travel to China. Together with two younger Britons, the officer Francis Younghusband and the diplomat Harry English Fulford, he explored Manchuria, travelling through the frontier areas of Chinese settlement in the region and to the Changbai Mountains. Evan James (cricketer)
Evan Llewellyn James (10 May 1918 – January 1989) was a Welsh cricketer. James was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm medium pace. He was born at Barry, Glamorgan. James made his first-class debut for Glamorgan against Warwickshire in the 1946 County Championship. He made eight further first-class appearances for the county, the last of which came against Derbyshire in the 1947 County Championship. In his nine first-class matches, he scored a total of 232 runs at an average of 29.00, with a high score of 62 not out. This score was one of two half centuries he made and came against the touring Indians in 1946, while his other half century score was a score of 59 not out and came against Derbyshire in 1946. With the ball, he took a single first-class wicket. He died in South Glamorgan sometime in January 1989.
