The first presenters, in 1991, were Andreas Gebauer and Ruth Hogarth. Other presenters were Teresa Guerreiro, Liliane Landor and James Coomarasamy. The programme was presented by Audrey Carville from 2004 - 2009. The last programme was presented by Paul Henley on 25 March 2011. Originally a 30-minute programme broadcast four times a day to Europe (three morning programmes and one in the evening), it gradually morphed into a one-hour programme broadcast in the evening, broadcast worldwide and with a wider, global focus. The BBC World Service is an international broadcasting, international broadcaster owned and operated by the BBC, with funding from the Government of the United Kingdom, British Government through the Foreign Secretary, Foreign Secretary's office. James Coomarasamy
James Coomarasamy is a British presenter of the BBC Radio 4 evening programme ''The World Tonight'' and the flagship '' Newshour'' programme on the BBC World Service. Before joining ''Newshour'' in 2010, Coomarasamy spent a year presenting the now defunct programme '' Europe Today.'' Before becoming a presenter (announcer) he had been a BBC correspondent in Warsaw, followed by Paris, then Washington, D.C. Early life Coomarasamy was born in London to parents of English and Sri Lankan ancestry. He was educated at Christ's Hospital School, an independent school for boys (now co-educational), near Horsham, West Sussex, followed by the University of Cambridge, where he studied modern and medieval languages. Audrey Carville
Audrey Carville (born 9 September 1972 in County Monaghan, Castleblayney, Ireland) is an Irish journalist. She is one of the presenters of ''Morning Ireland'', a breakfast news programme on RTÉ Radio One. She previously presented the current affairs programme ''The Late Debate'' on the same station. From 2004 to 2009, she presented the BBC World Service radio programme '' Europe Today''. She also presented '' Newshour'' on the BBC World Service. ''The Irish Times'' described her as having a "mellifluous voice and unflappable air." Carville is a native of Castleblayney in County Monaghan. Her father was Arthur Carville, who served as a Fine Gael party councillor on Monaghan County Council. Her brother, Gary Carville, also formerly served as a Fine Gael councillor on Monaghan County Council, serving as Chairman of that council from 2007 to 2008.
