The Gippsland Art Gallery, formerly Sale Regional Art Centre, is a Victorian Regional Public Gallery based in Sale, east of Melbourne. The gallery is operated by the Shire of Wellington, and has a focus on the natural environment and artists based in Gippsland. History The gallery was opened on 25 September 1965 by Rupert Hamer, as the Sale Regional Art Centre. It was built above the Sale Library at 82 Macalister Street, Sale. Construction of the gallery was funded by a state government grant of £20,000, with the Sale City Council contributing a further £10,000. An intensive program of temporary exhibitions was organised, complete with educational materials, and the institution soon became an important resource centre for schools, arts and crafts groups and the public, covering the whole area of Central and East Gippsland. Sale is a city situated in the Gippsland region of the Australian state of Victoria and the council seat of the Shire of Wellington. Sam Leach (artist)
Sam Leach (born 1973) is an Australian contemporary artist. He was born in Adelaide, South Australia. Leach worked for many years in the Australian Tax Office after completion of a degree in Economics. He also completed a Diploma of Art, Bachelor of Fine Art degree and a Master of Fine Art degree at RMIT in Melbourne, Victoria. Leach currently resides in Melbourne. Leach's work has been exhibited in several museum shows including "Optimism" at the Queensland Art Gallery and "Neo Goth" at the University of Queensland Art Museum in 2008, in 2009 "the Shilo Project" at the Ian Potter Museum of Art and "Horror Come Darkness" at the Macquarie University Art Gallery and "Still" at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery in 2010. Andrew Browne (born 1960) is an Australian contemporary artist. Browne was born in Melbourne. His paintings are realist in style and are influenced by photography. Ann Greenwood
Ann Greenwood (born 1939) is an Australian textile artist and art teacher. Her work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Victoria, the art collections of Glen Eira and Monash councils in Melbourne, the Gippsland Art Gallery, and Ararat Gallery TAMA. Ann Greenwood uses very simple weaving techniques. Over the years her work has developed more towards sculpture. In 1990 Ann visited Bhutan at the invitation of the Australian International Development and Assistance Bureau. Her visit was "to study the implications of finer wool and see how the women, who looked after the flocks, would process it and spin it." In 2018, aged 79, Ann moved from Gippsland to Berwick, an outer south-eastern suburb of Melbourne. Polixeni Papapetrou (21 November 1960 – 11 April 2018) was an Australian photographer noted for her themed photo series about people's identities. Photo series she has made include Elvis Presley fans, Marilyn Monroe impersonators, drag queens, wrestlers and bodybuilders and the recreation of photographs by Lewis Carroll, using her daughter as a model. Early life and career Papapetrou was born in 1960 into a Greek immigrant family in Melbourne. She attended the University of Melbourne, graduating with a degree in Arts and Law in 1984. In 1997 she graduated with a Master of Arts degree from RMIT University and with a PhD from Monash University in 2007. She worked as a lawyer between 1985 and 2001. Peter Booth
Peter Booth (born 2 November 1940) is an Australian figurative and a surrealist painter, and one of the key late-20th-century Australian artists. His work is characterised by an intense emotional power of often dark narratives, and esoteric symbolism. Life Booth was born the son of a doctor of metallurgy, and industrial surrounds of Sheffield influenced him from an early age. He and his family migrated to Australia in 1958, where he worked as a labourer for several years before attending the National Gallery School in Melbourne. In the 1980s Booth started his phase of horrifying figures, for example mutilated bodies and war scenes (sometimes with a light touch of humour), yet he always conveys a strong feeling in his art. Frederick Ronald Williams OBE (23 January 192722 April 1982) was an Australian painter and printmaker. He was one of Australia’s most important artists, and one of the twentieth century's major landscapists. He had more than seventy solo exhibitions during his career in Australian galleries, as well as the exhibition ''Fred Williams - Landscapes of a Continent'' at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1977. Portia Geach
Portia Stranston Geach (24 December 1873, Melbourne – 5 October 1959, Sydney) was an Australian artist and feminist. She was a founder and a president of the New South Wales Housewives' Association, as well as a president of the Federal Association of Australian Housewives. The Portia Geach Memorial Award, established by a legacy from Geach's sister, is Australia's most significant prize for Australian female portrait artists. Life and education Portia Geach was born on 24 December 1873 and became the fifth surviving child of Cornish parents Edwin Geach, warehouseman and draper, and his wife Catherine, née Greenwood.
