Ernest Elsworth Smith, Sr. (April 11, 1931 - May 22, 2012) played for the Baltimore Elite Giants of the Negro American League. Honors and awards Smith was the first member named to the Wythe County Sports Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Bluefield State Hall of Fame. Wytheville, Virginia
Wytheville is a town in, and the county seat of, Wythe County, in southwestern Virginia, United States. It is named after George Wythe, a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence, and mentor to Thomas Jefferson. Wytheville's population was 8,211 at the 2010 census. Interstate Highways 77 and 81 were constructed to intersect at the town, long a crossroads for travelers. During the American Civil War, Wytheville had a strategic importance. The Baltimore Elite Giants were a professional baseball team that played in the Negro league baseball, Negro leagues from to . The team was established by Tom Wilson (Negro baseball), Thomas T. Wilson, in Nashville, Tennessee as the semi-pro Nashville Standard Giants on March 26, 1920. The team was renamed the Elite Giants in , and moved to Baltimore, Maryland in , where the team remained for the duration of their existence. The team and its fans pronounced the word "Elite" as "ee-light". Wythe County
Wythe County is a county located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 28,290. Its county seat is Wytheville.
