Admiral (Royal Navy)
Admiral is a senior rank of the Royal Navy, which equates to the NATO rank code OF-9, outranked only by the rank of admiral of the fleet. Royal Navy officers holding the ranks of rear admiral, vice admiral and admiral of the fleet are sometimes considered generically to be admirals. The Battle of Bomarsund, in August 1854, took place during the Åland War, which was part of the Crimean War, when an Anglo- French expeditionary force attacked a Russian fortress. It was the only major action of the war to take place at Bomarsund in the Baltic Sea. Background Bomarsund was a 19th-century fortress, the construction of which had started in 1832 by Russia in Sund, Åland, in the Baltic Sea. Bomarsund had not been completed (only two towers of the planned twelve subsidiary towers had been completed). When the war broke out the fortress remained vulnerable especially against forces attacking over land. Designers of the fortress had also assumed that narrow sea passages near the fortress would not be passable for large naval ships; while this assumption had held true during the time of sailing ships, it was possible for steam powered ships to reach weakly defended sections of the fortress. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". The Battle of Suomenlinna (also known as the Battle of Viapori or the Bombardment of Sweaborg) was fought on 9–11 August 1855 between Russian defenders and a joint British/ French fleet during the Åland War. It was a part of the Crimean War. HMS Odin (1846)
HMS ''Odin'' was a steam-powered first-class paddle frigate of the Royal Navy. She was launched in 1846 and was used in the Baltic theatre of the Crimean War. The ship was launched on 24 July 1846, at 1,301 73/94 bm, and decommissioned in 1865. She was sold that year to Castle & Beech for breaking up. She was initially intended to carry eight 32pdr carronades on the middle deck, but this idea was later discarded and these guns were never fitted. Between 1850 and 1851 she was outfitted for an Ambassador. On December 22, 1862 (January 21, 1862), the First Japanese Embassy to Europe (1862) departed Shinagawa Port in Tokyo for Europe.
