Ernest Grimstone
Ernest Lancelot Grimstone (1883 – 22 October 1933) was an Australian politician. He was a Country and Progressive National Party member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1928 until 1933, representing the electorate of Stanley. Grimstone was born and educated in Mackay. He worked for the North Eton Sugar Milling Company after leaving school, but became a career teacher with the Queensland Department of Education after 1904. He taught at Ulam, near Rockhampton, Windorah West, Forsayth and Springsure, before being appointed headmaster at Yarraman Creek State School. While teaching on the Darling Downs, he also farmed experimental lots, mainly dealing in wheat and corn. Grimstone enlisted during World War I, trained at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, and was commissioned as a lieutenant. Electoral District Of Stanley (Queensland)
The electoral district of Stanley was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland. History Stanley was created by the ''Electoral Districts Act'' of 1872 as a single-member seat (taking effect from 1873). From 1878 it became a two-member constituency through incorporation of part of the Electoral district of West Moreton from which it had been derived in 1872. Stanley was abolished in the 1949 redistribution which placed most of it in the new Electoral district of Somerset. The Examiner (Tasmania)
''The Examiner'' is the daily newspaper of the city of Launceston and north-eastern Tasmania, Australia. Overview ''The Examiner'' was first published on 12 March 1842, founded by James Aikenhead. The Reverend John West was instrumental in establishing the newspaper and was the first editorial writer. At first it was a weekly publication (Saturdays). The Examiner expanded to Wednesdays six months later. In 1853, the paper was changed to tri-weekly (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays), and first began daily publication on 10 April 1866. This frequency lasted until 16 February the next year. Tri-weekly publication then resumed and continued until 21 December 1877 when the daily paper returned. William Forgan Smith
William Forgan Smith (15 April 188725 September 1953) was an Australian politician. He served as Premier of the state of Queensland from 1932 to 1942. He came to dominate politics in the state during the 1930s, and his populism, firm leadership, defence of states' rights and interest in state development make him something of an archetypal Queensland Premier. He represented the Labor Party. Early life Forgan Smith was born at Mynefield House, near Invergowrie, Perthshire, Scotland. His father was George Smith, the chief gardener at Airlie Castle. Toogoolawah, Queensland
Toogoolawah ( ) is a rural town and locality in the Somerset Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Toogoolawah had a population of 1,279 people. Geography Toogoolawah is in South East Queensland. Toogoolawah is a centre for gliding and parachuting and in the past the centre of a dairying industry. Cressbrook Creek, a tributary of the Brisbane River, passes through the town as does the Brisbane Valley Highway. Naming The district was originally known as ''Cressbrook'' after the Cressbrook Station operated by James Henry McConnel. The town took its present name ''Toogoolawah'' from its former railway station, which was named in November 1903 using the name ''Tugulawah'' proposed by McConnel, the name of the McConnel's residence at Bulimba, Brisbane (now known as Bulimba House). Arthur Edward Moore
Arthur Edward Moore (9 February 1876 – 7 January 1963) was an Australian politician. He was the Country and Progressive National Party Premier of Queensland, from 1929 to 1932. He was the only Queensland Premier not to come from the ranks of the Labor Party between 1915 and 1957. Although successful in achieving the unity of the conservative forces in Queensland for an extended period, Moore's abilities were tested by the onset of the Great Depression and like many other governments in Australia and elsewhere his was unable to endure the formidable challenges it posed. Early career Moore was born in Napier, New Zealand in 1876. His family moved to Australia in 1887 when his father became a bank manager in Melbourne. The younger Moore arrived in Queensland in 1898, where he was a dairy farmer on the Darling Downs and the owner of two cheese factories. Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 11 June 1932 to elect the 62 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The election was the first electoral test of the Country and Progressive National Party government led by Arthur Edward Moore, and was held in the midst of the Great Depression. Labor had previously held office from 1915 until 1929. The election resulted in the defeat of the one-term Moore government by the Labor Party, led by William Forgan Smith. Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 11 May 1929 to elect the 72 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. In this electionIrene Longmanbecame the first woman to both stand and be elected into the Queensland Parliament. The Labor government was seeking its sixth continuous term in office since the 1915 election; it would be Premier William McCormack's second election. His main opponent was the Country and Progressive National Party (CPNP), led by Arthur Edward Moore. Henry Plantagenet Somerset
Henry Plantagenet Somerset (19 May 1852 – 11 April 1936) was a pioneer pastoralist and politician in Queensland, Australia. Somerset was a liberal politician who represented the district of Stanley in the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1904 to 1920, and canvassed successfully for the extension of the Brisbane Valley railway through the Brisbane River Valley to the rich timber reserves in the Blackbutt Range and beyond. Both the Somerset Dam and the local government area of Somerset Region are named in his honour. Early life H. P. Somerset's family claimed descent from John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford through the Beaufort line. Henry was the second son of Colonel Charles Henry Somerset and Christina Emma Thompson and was born at Fort Armstrong in Kaffraria, Cape Colony (now South Africa) on 19 May 1852 where his father was a serving officer with the 72nd Highlanders.
