Ernest De Weerth
Ernest de Weerth (21 August 1894 - 28 March 1967) was a Paris-born set and costume designer for the American theatre. Early life and family Ernest de Weerth was born in Paris on 21 August 1894 to Helene de Weerth, formerly Helene Baltzell of Baltimore, who after marrying a Belgian, Ernest De Weerth Snr., lived most of her life in Europe. Streamlined Ocean Liner
The Streamlined Ocean Liner was a design by Norman Bel Geddes for a streamlined steam-powered ocean liner. The shape was compared by Pathé to that of a porpoise, blunt at the front and tapered at the rear. It first appeared in Geddes' 1932 book ''Horizons'' and an outline patent was filed in 1933 with a detailed patent following in 1934. An offer was made for the rights to the design in the late 1930s, which Geddes refused, as he still hoped to sell it to an American shipbuilder, but the ship was never built. Background Norman Bel Geddes was one of the first industrial designers in the United States. The Campo Verano (Italian: ''Cimitero del Verano'') is a cemetery in Rome, Italy, founded in the early 19th century. The monumental cemetery is currently divided into sections: the Jewish cemetery, the Catholic cemetery, and the monument to the victims of World War I. History The Verano (officially the "Communal Monumental Cemetery of Campo Verano") is located in the quartiere Tiburtino of Rome, near the Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le mura. The name ''verano'' refers to the Ancient Roman ''campo dei Verani'' that was located here. The zone contained ancient Christian catacombs. Norman Bel Geddes (born Norman Melancton Geddes; April 27, 1893 – May 8, 1958) was an American theatrical and industrial designer. Early life Bel Geddes was born Norman Melancton Geddes in Adrian, Michigan and was raised in New Philadelphia, Ohio, the son of Flora Luelle (née Yingling) and Clifton Terry Geddes, a stockbroker. When he married Helen Belle Schneider in 1916, they combined their names to ''Bel Geddes''. Their daughters were actress Barbara Bel Geddes and writer Joan Ulanov. Career Bel Geddes began his career with set designs for Aline Barnsdall's Los Angeles Little Theater in the 1916–17 season, then in 1918 as the scene designer for the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Webster Daniel Totheroh (July 22, 1894 – December 3, 1976) was an American author, playwright, and screenwriter. Biography Dan Totheroh was born in Oakland, California and raised largely in Marin County, California, Marin County, graduating from San Rafael High School in 1914. He began writing plays in high school, enjoying early success as his first play toured through surrounding towns. He was drafted into World War I, which thwarted his dreams for an acting career. In the 1920s Totheroh began writing plays professionally, and initially struggled to make a living. He eventually found success and several of his plays were produced onstage in New York.
