Ernest Bourget
Ernest Alexandre Joseph Bourget (10 March 1814 – 2 October 1864 in Thomery (Seine-et-Oise aged 50 ) was a 19th-century French playwright, lyricist and librettist. In 1847 at the Café des Ambassadeurs, Paul Henrion, Victor Parizot and Ernest Bourget refused to pay the bill as long as they would not receive anything from the performance of their works in the facility. The ensuing trial would mark the creation of the SACEM. According to recent research it was not this legendary event that Bourget took to trial. The contemporary journal ‘Le Droit‘ tells another story. M. Bourget was refused the drink he ordered at another establishment: the Café Morel. In the evenings the proprietor, M. Morel, served only guests who ordered drinks for which the garçon could not ‘deceive the corkscrew’. Paul Bourget
Paul Charles Joseph Bourget (; 2 September 185225 December 1935) was a French poet, novelist and critic. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times. Life Paul Bourget was born in Amiens in the Somme ''département'' of Picardy, France. His father, a professor of mathematics, was later appointed to a post in the college at Clermont-Ferrand, where Bourget received his early education. He afterwards studied at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand and at the École des Hautes Études. Between 1872 and 1873, he produced a volume of verse, ''Au Bord de la Mer'', which was followed by others, the last, ''Les Aveux'', appearing in 1882. Meanwhile, he was making a name in literary journalism and in 1883 he published ''Essais de Psychologie Contemporaine'', studies of eminent writers first printed in the ''Nouvelle Revue'', and now brought together. ''Tromb-al-ca-zar, ou Les criminels dramatiques'' is a ''bouffonnerie musicale'' in one act of 1856 with music by Jacques Offenbach. The French libretto was by Charles Dupeuty, Charles-Désiré Dupeuty and Ernest Bourget. With its dialogue containing plays on words and stage business from contemporary Parisian dramas and operas, it is described by Siegfried Kracauer, Kracauer as satirizing the romantic bandits of grand opera. Background ''Tromb-al-ca-zar'' was premiered in the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens, Salle Choiseul in Paris, preceded by two cantatas by Offenbach, ''Le Berceau'' and ''La Paix du monde''.. Charles-François Plantade (14 April 1787 – 26 May 1870) was a 19th-century French composer. Biography The son of the composer and harpsichordist Charles-Henri Plantade (1764–1839), he was a founding member of the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire (1828) and of the Société des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de musique (SACEM) (1858). The Théâtre Déjazet is a theatre on the boulevard du Temple (popularly known as the 'boulevard du crime’) in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris, France. It was founded in 1770 by Comte d'Artois who later was crowned Charles X. It was then closed down and not reopened until 1851. At that time it became a café-concert called the Folies-Mayer, on the site of a former ''jeu de paume'' (tennis court). François Anatole Laurent de Rillé (24 November 1828 – 26 August 1915), was a French composer, writer and musical theorist. De Rillé composed a number of operettas and sacred music works, but his name is more frequently associated with the so-called ''"Orphéonist"'' movement, which had also Hector Berlioz and Charles Gounod among its members, which sought to increase the knowledge of music among popular classes by way of setting up male choir associations. The name comes from the first of these associations, founded in Paris, who named itself ''"Orphéon"'' (from Orpheus). Alphonse Varney (; 1 December 1811 – 7 February 1879) was a French conductor, mainly of opera. His son was the composer Louis Varney who studied music with his father. Education He studied at the Paris Conservatoire including counterpoint with Reicha. Charles Désiré Dupeuty (6 February 1798 – 20 October 1865), was a 19th-century French librettist and playwright. Biography After he studied at the Lycée Impérial, he enrolled in the army during the Hundred Days then worked as an employee. He made his debut in the theatre in 1821, and in 1825 founded the opposition newspaper ''La nouveauté''. He is famous for being one of the founders of the Société des auteurs dramatiques of which he was vice-président for six years. Many of his plays were performed on the most important Parisians stages of the 19th century: Théâtre des Folies-Dramatiques, Théâtre du Vaudeville, Théâtre du Palais-Royal, Théâtre de la Gaîté, Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin, Théâtre des Variétés etc. Adolphe Dupeuty was his son. Jacques Offenbach (, also , , ; 20 June 18195 October 1880) was a German-born French composer, cellist and impresario of the Romantic period.
