Equestrian At The 1996 Summer Olympics – Individual Jumping
The individual show jumping event, part of the equestrian program at the 1996 Summer Olympics, was held from 29 July to 1 August 1996 at the Georgia International Horse Park, in Conyers, Georgia. Like all other equestrian events, the jumping competition was mixed gender, with both male and female athletes competing in the same division. There were 82 competitors from 24 nations. Each nation could have up to 4 riders. The event was won by Ulrich Kirchhoff of Germany, the nation's second consecutive victory in the individual jumping (and third overall, tying Italy for second-most all-time after France's four). It was the fourth consecutive Games at which Germany competed that the nation reached the podium in the event—gold in 1936 and bronze in 1952 (with no Games in 1940 or 1944, Germany disinvited in 1948, and either United Team of Germany or separate West Germany and East Germany teams competing from 1956 to 1988), before gold again in 1992 and 1996. Rodrigo de Paula Pessoa (born 29 November 1972 in Paris, France) is a Brazilian equestrian specialized in show jumping. The son of fellow equestrian Nelson Pessoa, Pessoa is considered one of the most talented of his generation, being an Olympic Games gold medalist in individual jumping and having over 70 Grand Prix wins. Peter Charles
Peter Charles, (born 1 January 1960) is an Irish-British equestrian who competes in the sport of show jumping. Originally a competitor for Great Britain, Charles changed nationalities to Irish in 1992. In 2007, he relinquished his status as an Irish rider and once again began representing Great Britain. He was in the British team which won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics. Charles was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to equestrianism. Leslie Burr-Howard
Leslie Burr-Howard (born October 1, 1956) is an American equestrian and an Olympic champion in showjumping. She won team gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and team silver at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, as well as team silver at the 1999 Winnipeg Pan American Games. Early life Leslie Burr-Howard was born Leslie Michele Burr on October 1, 1956, in Westport, Connecticut. She competed in her first show when she was 6 years old. She won the 1972 ASPCA Maclay Finals as a junior rider. John Whitaker MBE (born 5 August 1955, Huddersfield) is a British equestrian and Olympian who competes in show jumping. He has won numerous international medals including an olympic silver medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles. He is also the managing director of John Whitaker International Limited which produces tack and equestrian clothing. Álvaro Affonso de Miranda Neto (born 5 February 1973), more commonly known as Álvaro de Miranda or "Doda" Miranda, is an Olympic-class Brazilian show jumping rider. He was married to Athina Onassis. He is president of the organizing committee behind the Athina Onassis International Horse Show, which debuted in 2007 as the fifth stage of the Global Champions Tour in São Paulo. Geoff Billington
Geoff Billington is a British showjumper who has represented Great Britain on a number of occasions including during the European and World Championships and at the Olympics. As of Jan 2010, Geoff was ranked 13th on the Team GBR list. Early life Geoff Billington was born on 2 March 1955, and started riding at the age of nine years at a local riding school. He went to serve an apprenticeship with showjumper David Bowen. Urs (from ''‘Urs'') or ''Urus'' (literal meaning wedding), is the death anniversary of a Sufi saint, usually held at the saint's dargah (shrine or tomb). Hugo Simon
Hugo Simon (born 3 August 1942) is an Olympic medal-winning show jumper who took part in six Olympics between 1972 and 1996 (1980 excepted). Before his first Olympic appearance, he competed for West Germany, but in 1972 became an Austrian citizen. He won a silver medal at age 49 at the team event at the 1992 Olympics on the horse Apricot D. Four years later, at age 53, he came fourth in the individual event after a jump-off involving seven riders competing for two medals. He was the first person to win three World Cup titles, at the inaugural 1979 contest (on Gladstone) and also in 1997 and 1998 (both on E.T.). This feat was later matched by Rodrigo Pessoa in 2000 and Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum in 2009. Simon is a businessman who has always considered show jumping a favorite hobby.
