Equestrian At The 1912 Summer Olympics – Individual Eventing
The eventing, individual eventing (Military) was an Equestrianism, equestrian event held as part of the equestrian at the 1912 Summer Olympics programme. It was the first appearance of the event. The competition was held from Saturday to Wednesday, 13 to 17 July 1912 for a period of five days, with a day rest after the first two events. A maximum of four riders from each nation was allowed. The entries closed on 1 June 1912. Every rider had to ride only one and the same horse in the event. Results The start and finish were both on the grounds of the Field Riding Club. In consequence of the hot weather prevailing, the ground was very hard. All the competitors were previously shown the course, which was marked with red flags. In addition to this, a map of the course and definite instructions were given by the guides to the competitors. Gaston Seigner (22 April 1878 in Moulins, Allier – 26 April 1918 in Mont-Rouge, Belgium) was a French equestrian and Olympic medalist. He competed in show jumping at the 1912 Summer Olympics, where he won a silver medal with the French team, along with Pierre Dufour d'Astafort, Jacques Cariou and Ernest Meyer. Brigadier-General Paul Aloysius Kenna, VC, DSO (16 August 1862 – 30 August 1915) was an English-born British Army officer of Irish descent and recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that could be awarded to British and British Empire forces. He also competed at the 1912 Summer Olympics. Background He was the son of James Kenna, of Liverpool, who was descended from a family of minor gentry from County Meath. Kenna was educated first at St.Francis Xavier's College, Salisbury Street, Liverpool, then, after his father's death, at St. Augustine's College in Ramsgate 1874-9, and, from the age of 17, at Stonyhurst College. John Carter Montgomery (Elizabethtown, Kentucky, November 22, 1881 – Washington, D.C., June 7, 1948) was an American Equestrianism, equestrian who competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics. Montgomery graduated from West Point in 1903 and was commissioned in the 7th Cavalry Regiment. In 1907, he married Virginia Lee, daughter of Major General Fitzhugh Lee. Major General Guy Vernor Henry Jr. (January 28, 1875 – November 29, 1967) was a senior officer in the United States Army and a noted horse rider who competed for the United States in the 1912 Summer Olympics. Early life Guy V. Henry Jr. was born into the military life. Son of Guy Vernor Henry, he went on to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1898, and distinguished his military career by earning the Silver Star in 1899 during the Spanish–American War. Henry went on to study at the Saumur Cavalry School in France and used the knowledge he gained there to change the treatment and training of United States Cavalry horses. This included starting horses not by "breaking" them using the traditional western methods, but by training them on the longe, then slowly teaching them to accept the weight of a human on their back.
