Episyrphus Noumeae
''Episyrphus'' is a genus of hoverflies in the subfamily Syrphinae. Larvae are predatory, often on aphids. Two subgenera are recognized, ''Episyrphus'' and ''Asiobaccha''. Species of the latter are distinguished by a petiolate abdomen. It has been claimed that classification within the genus ''Episyrphus'' needs revision, due to the poor clarity of species names and distinguishing characteristics between them. Characters such as the colors on the abdomen or of the pile on the frons and scutellum, often taken as diagnostic, have been found to depend on temperature in studies on ''E. viridaureus''. Species *'' E. arcifer'' (Sack, 1927) *'' E. balteatus'' (De Geer, 1776) *'' E. canaqueus'' (Bigot, 1884) *'' E. circularis'' Hull, 1941 *'' E. contax'' (Curran, 1947) *'' E. contractus'' (Keiser, 1952) *'' E. demeijerei'' (Curran, 1947) *'' E. divertens'' (Walker, 1856) *'' E. flavibasis'' Keiser, 1971 *'' E. fuscicolor'' (Bigot, 1884) *'' E. glaber'' (Wright, 2013) *'' E. insul ...

Episyrphus Balteatus
''Episyrphus balteatus'', sometimes called the marmalade hoverfly, is a relatively small hoverfly (9–12 mm) of the Syrphidae family, widespread throughout the Palaearctic region, which covers Europe, North Asia, and North Africa. The upper side of the abdomen is patterned with orange and black bands. Two further identification characters are the presence of secondary black bands on the third and fourth dorsal plates and faint greyish longitudinal stripes on the thorax. Its color patterns may appear wasp-like to other animals, such as birds, protecting it from predation. ''Episyrphus balteatus'' can be found throughout the year in various habitats, including urban gardens, visiting flowers for pollen and nectar. They often form dense migratory swarms, which may cause panic among people for their resemblance to wasps. It is among the very few species of flies capable of crushing pollen grains and feeding on them. The larva is terrestrial and feeds on aphids. As in most oth ...

Vockeroth graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1948 with a B.A., followed in 1949 by a M.A. He got a D. Phil. in 1954 at Oxford University with a thesis on Scathophagidae.
