Episcopal Conference
An episcopal conference, sometimes called a conference of bishops, is an official assembly of the bishops of the Catholic Church in a given territory. Episcopal conferences have long existed as informal entities. The first assembly of bishops to meet regularly, with its own legal structure and ecclesial leadership function, is the Swiss Bishops' Conference, which was founded in 1863. More than forty episcopal conferences existed before the Second Vatican Council. Their status was confirmed by the Second Vatican Council and further defined by Pope Paul VI's 1966 ''motu proprio'', ''Ecclesiae sanctae''. Episcopal conferences are generally defined by geographic borders, often national ones, with all the bishops in a given country belonging to the same conference, although they may also include neighboring countries. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Mayagüez ( la, Dioecesis Maiaguezensis) is an ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States and consists of the western part of the island of Puerto Rico, an American commonwealth. The diocese is led by a prelate bishop, who pastors the motherchurch in the City of Mayagüez, Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria in front of the Plaza Colón. The See of Mayagüez was canonically erected on March 1, 1976 and is a suffragan diocese of the Metropolitan Province of San Juan de Puerto Rico. The Diocese is subdivided into 29 Parishes: 17 originally located at the Diocese of Ponce, eight formerly at the Diocese of Arecibo, and four new parishes. The Catholic Church in Puerto Rico is part of the worldwide Catholic Church in communion with the Pope in Rome. The 78 municipalities in Puerto Rico have a Catholic Church which is located in the downtown area, normally across from the central plaza. History In Puerto Rico, the founding of a town (or municipio) very much depended on the building of a church, a town hall, a butcher's shop and a cemetery. The citizens of the town constructed and decorated the church. Ulises Aurelio Casiano Vargas (September 25, 1933 – August 5, 2018) was a Puerto Rican bishop emeritus of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mayagüez, in Mayagüez. Casiano was born at the Palmarejo ward in the nearby town of Lajas, which is also the birthplace of the first native Puerto Rican Roman Catholic cardinal, Luis Aponte Martínez. He attended the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico in nearby Ponce, from which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Education (Social Sciences) in 1955. He then became a schoolteacher and school administrator, with a reputation for efficiency. He then joined the University's Regina Cleri Seminar, and continued Theology studies at Our Lady of Angels seminar in New York. Casiano was eventually ordained a priest on May 30, 1967. Iñaki Mallona Txertudi C.P. (July 1, 1932 – May 3, 2021) was a Spanish-born prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who served as Bishop of the Diocese of Arecibo in Puerto Rico from 1992 to 2010 Biography Early life and ordination Txertudi was born in Fruiz, Spain. He was ordained into the priesthood for the Congregation of the Passion (Passionists) on March 27, 1956. Juan Fremiot Torres Oliver (28 October 1925 – 26 January 2012) was a Puerto Rican prelate of the Catholic Church. He was the longest-serving bishop for the Diocese of Ponce in Ponce, Puerto Rico, with 36 years of service from 1964 to 2000. Priesthood and episcopacy Torres Oliver was ordained priest in Ponce at age 24, on 10 April 1950. He was appointed bishop of Ponce on 4 November 1964 at age 39 and was consecrated on 21 December 1964. He retired as bishop of Ponce at age 75, on 10 November 2000, after a 36-year episcopate. Luis Aponte Martínez (August 4, 1922 – April 10, 2012) was a Puerto Rican Catholic prelate who served as Archbishop of San Juan from 1965 to 1999. He is the only Puerto Rican to have been named a cardinal of the Catholic Church. He participated as an elector in the two conclaves of 1978, which elected Popes John Paul I and John Paul II.
