Epiphanius Of Petra
Epiphanius of Petra ( grc-gre, Ἐπιφάνιος ὁ Πετραῖος), also called Epiphanius of Syria, was a sophist and rhetorician at Athens in the first half of the fourth century AD. He is described as a coming from Petra in Arabia Petraea, Arabia by the ''Suda'', a ninth-century Byzantine literature, Byzantine encyclopaedia, but as coming from Roman Syria, Syria by Eunapius. This is not necessarily a contradiction, since urban Arabs frequently identified as Syrian. The ''Suda'' calls another sophist, Callinicus of Petra, both a Syrian and an Arabian. Epiphanius Evesham
Epiphanius Evesham ( fl. 1570 – c. 1623) was a British sculptor. He was born in Wellington, Herefordshire, a twin, and the youngest of fourteen siblings. His parents were William Evesham of Burghope Hall and his wife, Jane Haworthe, daughter of Alexander Haworthe. The family moved to London in the early 1580s. Evesham studied sculpture under Richard Stephens, a Dutchman who specialised in alabaster work in the 'Southwark' style, at his studio in that town. He also studied metal engraving, and one such inscription remains: a memorial to one Edmund West, dated 1618. This can be found in the parish church in Marsworth, Buckinghamshire. He is known as one of the first members of the gentry to train as a sculptor. Between 1600 and 1615, Evesham was living and working in Paris, creating monuments for major figures, including one of the Archbishop of Sens, for the cathedral of Notre-Dame. Epiphanios of Mylopotamos ( el, Επιφάνιος ο Μυλοποταμινός, translit=Epifanios o Mylopotaminos; born 1956, Nikisiani, Kavala; died 11 December 2020, Mylopotamos, Mount Athos), also known as Epifanios Mylopotaminos, was a Greek Orthodox monk and chef. He is best known for publicizing the gastronomy and viticulture of Mount Athos to the wider world. Life He was born and raised in Nikisiani, Kavala, northern Greece in 1956. He became a monk at Mount Athos in 1973. Initially, he was a monk at the Monastery of Agiou Pavlou. In the 1980s, he also lived briefly at the Monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt. Anba Epiphanius (June 27, 1954 – July 29, 2018) ( cop, Ⲁⲃⲃⲁ ⲉⲡⲓⲫⲁⲛⲓⲟⲥ; ar, الأنبا أبيفانيوس) was an Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Church bishop. He was appointed the bishop and abbot of the Monastery of St. Macarius in 2013, a position he held until his death on July 29, 2018. Life Anba Epiphanius was born in Tanta, Egypt, in 1954. Epiphanius Slavinetsky
Epifany Slavinetsky (russian: Епифа́ний Славине́цкий) (c. 1600 - November 19, 1675) was an ecclesiastical expert of the Russian Orthodox Church who helped Patriarch Nikon to revise ancient service-books. His actions precipitated the ''raskol'', the great schism of the national church. Epifany was born in Moscow. In the 1620s, he attended the Kiev Brotherhood School and furthered his education abroad. He was one of the most educated people of his period in Central and Eastern Europe. He came to master Latin, Polish, Ancient Greek and Hebrew. On his return to Kiev, he took monastic vows in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. In the late 1630s, he compiled the first Latin-Church Slavonic lexicon, which he would revise on several occasions. Upon hearing about Epifany's scholarly expertise, the Imperial Russian Tsar Alexis invited him to correct the ecclesiastical books of Muscovy. Epiphanius The Wise
Epiphanius the Wise (russian: Епифаний Премудрый) (died 1420) was a monk from Rostov, hagiographer and disciple of Saint Sergius of Radonezh. Historian Serge A. Zenkovsky wrote that Epiphanius, along with Stephen of Perm, Sergius of Radonezh, and the painter Andrei Rublev, signified "the Russian spiritual and cultural revival of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth century." Life Epiphanius was born in Rostov in the first half of the fourteenth century. As a young man, he joined the monastery of Gregory the Theologian in Rostov. There he learned to copy manuscripts and paint icons. He would also have learned Greek and the Greek hagiographic traditions. Later he went to Trinity Monastery, a house founded by Sergius of Radonezh in 1337. Epiphanius travelled extensively, and is known to have visited Moscow, Constantinople and Mount Athos. Epiphanius of Salamis ( grc-gre, Ἐπιφάνιος; c. 310–320 – 403) was the bishop of Salamis, Cyprus, at the end of the 4th century. He is considered a saint and a Church Father by both the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic Churches. He gained a reputation as a strong defender of orthodoxy. He is best known for composing the ''Panarion'', a very large compendium of the heresies up to his own time, full of quotations that are often the only surviving fragments of suppressed texts. According to Ernst Kitzinger, he "seems to have been the first cleric to have taken up the matter of Christian religious images as a major issue", and there has been much controversy over how many of the quotations attributed to him by the Byzantine Iconoclasts were actually by him. Regardless of this he was clearly strongly against some contemporary uses of images in the church.
