The environment of Azerbaijan, includes a wide diversity of climates, animals, plants, and habitats. National protection Due to the tapping of oil reserves in the early 20th century, Azerbaijan has had sufficient resources to develop an industrial sector, which in turn led to a significant increase in pollution. Under the centrally-planned Soviet command economy Baku became an industrialized capital city. Moscow could, for example, order that all air conditioners in the Soviet Union be built in Azerbaijan, such arbitrary and unilateral control of industrial output often led to environmental neglect and increased pollution, which caused serious damage to nature within Azerbaijan. Baku Bay
Bay of Baku (Baku Bay) is a natural harbor of the Baku port and local yacht club, on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula and on the western shore of the Caspian Sea. Description It has an area of 50 km² and a coastline of 20 km. The bay is bordered by Sultan Cape in the east, Shikh Cape on the south-west and the islands of Qum, Dash Zira and Boyuk Zira in the south and south-east. These islands are part of the Baku Archipelago which lies mostly within the bay. These characteristics make it an ideal place for a harbor. There lies Baku Boulevard on the seashore. Shirvan State Reserve
Shirvan State Reserve was established on the area of of a part of Bendovan State Game reserve in 1969 for the purpose of protecting and increasing the number of water birds. The area of the reserve was expanded to in 1982. Ecology The reserves is characterized by rich ornithological fauna. Water reserves account for of the area. Rare and valuable birds nest and winter in the swampy areas. The largest part of the reserve was transferred to the Shirvan National Park in 2003, and the area of the reserve currently totals . Shahbuz State Reserve
Shahbuz State Reserve was created on the area of 31.39 km² of Shahbuz District of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan on June 16, 2003. The area of Batabat Lake is mainly surrounded by grassland. Medicinal herbs, oak trees etc. dominate the flora of the area. The most widely spread animals are partridge, broad-tailed nightingale, among mammals-brown bear, badger, lynx, etc. It was established in June 2003 for the purpose of protecting rare and endangered species of plants and animals. Pirgulu State Reserve
Pirgulu State Reserve was established in 1968 on the area of in 1968 in the Shamakhi District, one of the most beautiful areas of the south-east of the Caucasus, Large Caucasus. The aim was to protect mountain forests, herbage of different kinds, fertile soil, expand forest areas and prevent air pollution. The reserve lies there between 1.600 and 2.000 m of altitude. Ilisu State Reserve
Ilisu State Reserve was established on the area of in 1987 in Qakh Rayon, Azerbaijan. It aims to protect natural complexes of southern slopes of Major Caucasus, to preserve rare and endangered flora and fauna, to restore forests and prevent erosion of soil and flood. The reserve accounts for 500 plant species with nearly 60 species of endemic ones. One can come across such animals as roe deer, wild boar and chamois. Gobustan State Reserve
Gobustan State Historical and Cultural Reserve ( az, Qobustan dövlət tarixi-bədii qoruğu) is located west of the settlement of Gobustan, about southwest of the centre of Baku. It was established in 1966, when the area was declared a national historical landmark of Azerbaijan in an attempt to preserve the prehistoric rock carvings, mud volcanoes and musical stones in the region. Gobustan State Reserve is very rich in archeological monuments. Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape within the reserve, which covers an area of 537 ha, has more than 6,000 rock carvings, which depict people, animals, battle-pieces, ritual dances, bullfights, boats with armed oarsmen, warriors with lances in their hands, camel caravans, pictures of sun and stars, on the average dating back to 5,000-20,000 years. Gizil-Agach State Reserve
Ghzil-Aghaj State Reserve ( az, Qızılağac dövlət qoruğu), meaning golden tree, was established on July 3, 1929 by the Committee on Protection of the Ancient and Art Monuments of Azerbaijan on an area of 884 km² on Kyzylagach Bay at the southwestern shore of the Caspian Sea, in Lankaran District, southeastern Azerbaijan. Gara-Yaz State Reserve
Gara-Yaz State Reserve or Qarayazy State Reserve was established on the area of 48.55 km2 in 1978 for protecting and restoring of riparian woodlands around the Kur. It mainly protects rare and endangered tugai ecological systems, occupying the lands in the mid stream of the Kur. Riparian woodlands includes such types of trees as white poplar, oak, alder-tree and white acacia. Eldar Pine State Reserve
Eldar Pine State Reserve is a state reserve in Azerbaijan. It was established on the area of 16.86 km2 of Samuh administrative region on December 16, 2004. In 1967 the reserve (with the area of 3.92 km2) was transformed into the branch of Goy-Gol State Reserve. At present this reserve surrounds 16.86 km2 area and complex has been founded in the reserve. Eldar Pine The reserve is mainly designed for preserving and protecting of rare and endemic species of trees; Eldar Pine. Expansion On December 28, 2006, the Azerbaijani Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Minister; Huseyn Bagirov announced the expansion of the Eldar Pine State Reserve. Basut-Chay State Reserve
Basut-Chay State Reserve or Besitchay State Reserve is protected area of Azerbaijan, near the border with Armenia. It was established as a 107 hectare reserve in 1974 for preserving and protecting the rare Oriental plane tree. The area of the reserve was slightly reduced by 10 hectares in October 1980.
