Basidiomycota () is one of two large divisions that, together with the Ascomycota, constitute the subkingdom Dikarya (often referred to as the "higher fungi") within the kingdom Fungi. Members are known as basidiomycetes. The Exobasidiomycetes are a class of fungi sometimes associated with the abnormal outgrowths of plant tissues known as galls. Smut Fungus
The smuts are multicellular fungi characterized by their large numbers of teliospores. The smuts get their name from a Germanic word for dirt because of their dark, thick-walled, and dust-like teliospores. They are mostly Ustilaginomycetes (phylum Basidiomycota) and can cause plant disease. The smuts are grouped with the other basidiomycetes because of their commonalities concerning sexual reproduction. Smuts are cereal and crop pathogens that most notably affect members of the grass family (Poaceae) and sedges (Cyperaceae). Economically important hosts include maize, barley, wheat, oats, sugarcane, and forage grasses. They eventually hijack the plants' reproductive systems, forming galls which darken and burst, releasing fungal teliospores which infect other plants nearby. Hans Sydow
Hans Sydow (29 January 1879 – 6 June 1946) was a German mycologist and the son of mycologist and lichenologist, Paul Sydow (1851–1925). Career Hans Sydow worked at the Dresdner Bank in Berlin between 1904 and 1937 rising to divisional manager in 1922. Before, during and after this time he also pursued a career as a mycologist. Together with his father he co-authored many works before his father's death in 1925, most substantial of which were four volumes of monographs on the Uredinales (now called ''Pucciniales''), ' (''Monograph on the Uredinales, description of known species and outline of systematics''). The first volume covered the genus Puccinia and the second the genus Uromyces. The third volume described the systematics and taxonomy used to classify the family and provided a key as well as further descriptions of other genera including Gymnosporangium and Phragmidium.
