The England cricket team toured South Africa under the auspices of the Marylebone Cricket Club from December 1905 to March 1906. There were five Test matches, and seven first-class games against South African provincial teams. While the team won a number of their first-class matches, they also lost several, and South Africa won the Test series 4 to 1. South Africa
South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa (RSA), is the southernmost country in Africa. First Class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. David Denton (cricketer)
David Denton (4 July 1874 – 16 February 1950) was an English first-class cricketer. An attacking batsman, he had a long career with Yorkshire and played eleven Tests for England. His nickname of 'Lucky' came from his habit of surviving the numerous chances that his attacking batting style created for the opposition. He was a fine deep fielder, and was said to be an excellent judge of a high catch, but did little bowling: his only really significant contribution with the ball came in 1896, when he took 5–42 against South of England. He also had one first-class stumping to his name, against Cambridge University in 1905. Career Denton was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, and showed promise as a teenager, scoring a half-century in a Colts game in 1892. HDG Leveson-Gower
Sir Henry Dudley Gresham Leveson Gower ( ; 8 May 1873 – 1 February 1954) was an English cricketer from the Leveson-Gower family. He played first-class cricket for Oxford University and Surrey and captained England in Test cricket. His school nickname "Shrimp" remained with him through his life, but few cricket sources refer to him by anything other than his initials. He was a selector for the England cricket team, and a cricketing knight. Sussex CCC
Sussex County Cricket Club is the oldest of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Sussex. Its limited overs team is called the Sussex Sharks. The club was founded in 1839 as a successor to the various Sussex county cricket teams, including the old Brighton Cricket Club, which had been representative of the county of Sussex as a whole since the 1720s. JC Hartley
Colonel John Cabourn Hartley (15 November 1874 – 8 March 1963), known as Jock Hartley, was an English first-class cricketer and British Army officer. Cricket career Hartley was educated at Tonbridge School and Brasenose College, Oxford. He played first-class cricket for Oxford University from 1895 to 1897 and Sussex from 1895 to 1898. He then went on to play for Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in first-class fixtures until the 1926 season. He was vice-captain of the MCC team in New Zealand in 1922-23, but captained most of the matches owing to an injury to the captain, Archie MacLaren. Hartley played two Test matches for England on their tour to South Africa in 1905-06, but with little success. His best first-class bowling figures were 8 for 161 for Oxford University in the first innings in Oxford's victory over Cambridge University in 1896. LJ Moon
2nd Lieutenant Leonard James Moon (9 February 1878 – 23 November 1916) was an officer in the British Army who died of wounds suffered in World War I. Before the war, he was an amateur first-class cricketer who played for Middlesex County Cricket Club from 1899 to 1909, and in four Test matches for England in 1905–06. He was born in London and died near Salonika. Moon also played football for Corinthians and his brother Billy was an England international goalkeeper. Moon was a right-handed top-order batsman and an occasional wicket-keeper. He played in 96 first-class matches. He scored 4,166 career runs at an average of 26.87 runs per completed innings with a highest score of 162 as one of seven centuries. Hampshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class cricket, first-class county cricket, county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the Historic counties of England, historic county of Hampshire. Hampshire teams formed by earlier organisations, principally the Hambledon Club, always had first-class status and the same applied to the county club when it was founded in 1863. EG Wynyard
Edward George Wynyard (1 April 1861 – 30 October 1936) was a British Army officer and an English cricketer who played in three Tests from 1896 to 1906. He captained Hampshire County Cricket Club between 1896 and 1899. Wynyard was also a successful amateur football player. In 1881, he was a member of the Old Carthusians team that won the FA Cup Final, in which he scored the opening goal in a 3–0 victory over Old Etonians. Early life Wynyard was born 1 April 1861, at Saharanpur in British India, the son of a magistrate in the Bengal Civil Service. He was educated in England at Woodcote House School, Windlesham, at Charterhouse School from 1874 to 1877, and St Edward's School, Oxford, leaving in 1879. Surrey County Cricket Club (Surrey CCC) is a first-class club in county cricket, one of eighteen in the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. JN Crawford
John Neville Crawford (1 December 1886 – 2 May 1963) was an English first-class cricketer who played mainly for Surrey County Cricket Club and South Australia. An amateur, he played as an all-rounder. As a right-handed batsman, Crawford had a reputation for scoring quickly and hitting powerful shots. He bowled medium-paced off spin and was noted for his accuracy and his ability to make the ball turn sharply from the pitch. Unusually for a first-class cricketer, Crawford wore spectacles while playing. Crawford established a reputation as an outstanding cricketer while still a schoolboy. Essex County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Essex. Founded in 1876, the club had minor county status until 1894 when it was promoted to first-class status pending its entry into the County Championship in 1895, since then the team has played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England.
