Emporia State Hornets
The Emporia State Hornets are the College athletics, athletic teams that represent Emporia State University (ESU). The women's basketball and softball teams use the name Lady Hornets. The university's athletic program fields 15 varsity teams in 11 sports all of whom have combined to win 50 conference championships as well as three national championships (1 NAIA, 1 AIAW and 1 NCAA). Corky the Hornet serves as the mascot representing the teams, and the school colors are black and Gold (color), gold. Emporia State participates in the NCAA Division II and has been a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) since 1991. Emporia State University (Emporia State or ESU) is a public university in Emporia, Kansas, United States. Established in March 1863 as the Kansas State Normal School, Emporia State is the third-oldest public university in the state of Kansas. Emporia State Lady Hornets Basketball
The Emporia State Lady Hornets basketball team represents Emporia State University and competes in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) of the NCAA Division II. On April 28, 2023, Brian Ostermann was announced as the eighth head coach. Overview The Lady Hornets annually play a nineteen-game conference schedule that is preceded by an out-of-conference schedule that includes one exhibition game between the Kansas Jayhawks or the Kansas State Wildcats, switching every other year. The conference schedule consists of playing every MIAA member at least once, some twice. Emporia State does, however, play the Washburn Ichabods in the rivalry known as the Turnpike Tussle and the Pittsburg State Gorillas twice a year. Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference
The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The KCAC is the oldest conference in the NAIA and the second oldest in the United States, tracing its history to 1890. Erin is a Hiberno-English word for Ireland originating from the Irish word ''"Éirinn"''. Kent L. Weiser (born April 25, 1959) is an American university sports administrator and former college golf coach. Weiser served the athletic director for Emporia State University, a NCAA Division II sports program in Emporia, Kansas, 1999 to 2022. Previously, Weiser was the associate athletics director at Oregon State University. Early years Weiser was born in Great Bend, Kansas and attended Great Bend High School. Bill Quayle
William Quayle (born April 8, 1940) is a former American university sports administrator and professor. Quayle worked as athletic director for Emporia State University, an NCAA Division II sports program in Emporia, Kansas. Career Quayle began as an admissions counselor at Central College in Iowa in 1963, and then became the assistant director of admissions at Augustana College in Illinois in 1965. In 1968, he left for Phillips University in Oklahoma to become an associate professor, associate athletics director, and tennis coach. Bill Tidwell
Billy Dale Tidwell (born April 8, 1932) was an American university sports administrator and former college track and field and cross country coach. Tidwell served as Emporia State University's athletic director from 1971 to 1979, and coached track and field, as well as cross country from 1979 until 1984 after his retirement as athletics director. Early years Tidwell was born in Kiowa, Kansas and attended Kiowa High School. After high school, Tidwell attended the Kansas State Teachers College (KSTC) to compete in cross country and track & field. He was a four-time national NAIA champion. Tidwell graduated with a bachelor's of science education in health in 1957, followed by a master's degree in 1958. Tidwell received his doctorate from Columbia University. Norris A. Patterson (1917 – May 10, 2000) was an American football coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri from 1950 to 1967, compiling a record of 133–33–9. He coached Bill Snyder, who played as a defensive back at William Jewell from 1959 to 1962, later served as head football coach at Kansas State University, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2015. Patterson was also the athletic director at William Jewell from 1950 to 1968 and United States International University—now known as Alliant International University—in San Diego, California from 1969 to 1975. Fran Welch
Francis George Welch (August 21, 1895 – June 19, 1970) was an American football player and coach, track and field coach, and college athletics administrator. He was of the first three coaches to be selected for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Track and Field Hall of Fame and is a member of the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. In 1960, Emporia State University named the football stadium Francis G. Welch Stadium to honor his legacy. Additionally, Hargis coached athletics in Kansas and Oregon.
