The Embassy of the United States in Lima is the official diplomatic mission of the U.S. to the Republic of Peru. The current U.S. ''chargé d'Affaires'' to Peru is John T. McNamara. History Original buildings Peru and the United States established relations on May 2, 1826, following Peru's independence from Spain, and relations were elevated to embassy level on 1920. The embassy of the United States was housed in different buildings before the opening of its current location. Prior to relations being elevated to embassy, the legation was located at the Quinta Heeren. In 1925, the U.S. government purchased a property in the Santa Beatriz area of Lima district to house its embassy. The three-floor building was designed by U.S. architect Frederick Larkin, in association with Leland W. Arequipa Avenue ( es, Avenida Arequipa), formerly known as Leguía Avenue ( es, Avenida Leguía), is one of the main avenues of Lima, Peru. It extends from north to south in the districts of Lima, Lince, San Isidro and Miraflores along 52 blocks. It has a bike path located along its entire central berm. The Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement ( es, Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru, abbreviated MRTA) was a Peruvian Marxism-Leninism, Marxist-Leninist Guerrilla warfare, guerrilla group which started in the early 1980s. Their self-declared goal was to demonstrate to leftist groups in Peru that sought change through the current government the viability of radical revolution. The MRTA also aimed to provide an alternative to another militant group, the Shining Path, which placed them in direct competition. Internal Conflict In Peru
The internal conflict in Peru is an ongoing armed conflict between the Government of Peru and the Marxism–Leninism–Maoism, Maoist guerilla group Shining Path. The conflict began on 17 May 1980, and from 1982 to 1997 the Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement waged its own insurgency as a Marxist–Leninist rival to the Shining Path. It is estimated that there have been between 50,000 and 70,000 deaths, making it the bloodiest war in History of Peru, Peruvian history, since the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire, European colonization of the country. Lima Civic Center
The Lima Civic Center ( es, Centro Cívico de Lima) is an architectural complex located next to the Paseo de los Héroes Navales in the district of Lima, on the land previously occupied by the Lima Penitentiary. It was projected with the intention of becoming a civic-urban landmark for the city, housing State offices, a hotel and a convention center.
