Elmhurst is an unincorporated community in New Castle County, Delaware, United States. It was founded in the late 1910s and consists of about 500 houses. Location Elmhurst is located northwest of Delaware Route 4 and west of Delaware Route 100 to the southwest of Wilmington and south of Elsmere. It is located at latitude 39°43'50" North, longitude 75°35'24" West. It was built on Newport Pike, opposite of another community called Ashley. History The community of Elmhurst was started in the late 1910s, first being advertised for in April 1918. It opened to the public on May 11, and by May 17 '' The Morning News'' reported that "a great number of lots already sold." A major expansion to the community was in the 1930s, when most of the current houses were built. It is Delaware's only area code, and was assigned in 1947 as one of the original North American area codes. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Delaware Route 100 (DE 100) is a state highway in New Castle County, Delaware. The route runs from DE 4 near Elsmere to the Pennsylvania border near Montchanin, where it continues into Pennsylvania as State Route 3100 (SR 3100, Chadds Ford Road). The road runs through suburban areas of northern New Castle County. The route intersects DE 2 in Elsmere before forming separate concurrencies with DE 48 and DE 141 from west of Wilmington north to Greenville. In Greenville, there is an interchange with DE 52. North of Greenville, DE 100 continues by itself to the Pennsylvania border, intersecting DE 92 in Montchanin. Elsmere, Delaware
Elsmere is a town in New Castle County, Delaware, United States, bordering the city of Wilmington along Wilmington's western border. According to the 2010 Census, the population of the town is 6,131. History Elsmere dates back to 1886 when real estate developer Joshua Heald bought farmland and converted it into houses, building the first suburb in northern Delaware. The community was built at an intersection of railroad lines and allowed working-class families easy access to Wilmington. Trolley lines were later built leading to Elsmere. In 1909, Elsmere was incorporated as a town. During the 1910s, the Delaware State Fair Association purchased land and built a new fairgrounds within Elsmere's town limit.
