''Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton'' is a bronze sculpture by Jim and Christina Demetro, installed at Puerto Vallarta's Casa Kimberly, in the Mexican state of Jalisco. Description The life-size bronze statue depicting Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in a sitting position is installed at Casa Kimberly, a boutique hotel converted from Taylor's former residence. History The artwork was commissioned by Janice Chatterton, the owner of Casa Kimberly and other properties. Jim Demetro created a smaller version, called ''Los Amantes – The Lovers'', before completing one depicting Taylor and Burton. Multiple limited-edition bronze statuettes have been sold at Casa Kimberly and Demetro Galeria. Jim Demetro is a sculptor. Forty-seven of his public artworks were displayed internationally, as of 2009. Early life and education Demetro was raised in South Chicago. Both of his parents died before he was twenty years old. He graduated from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Career Demetro is a sculptor. He has a studio in Battle Ground, Washington. Personal life Demetro spends time in Battle Ground; in 2017, he received the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Clark County Arts Commission at a Clark County Council meeting. A statue of Elizabeth Taylor was sculpted from redwood by the artist Edmund Kara for the 1964 film '' The Sandpiper''. The film starred Taylor and Richard Burton who had recently become her fifth husband. The piece was sculpted from a 2,200 lbs trunk of redwood; the finished piece weighed 712 lbs. The piece is depicted in the film as having been sculpted by Charles Bronson's character, Cos Erickson, who is love with Taylor's character, Laura Reynolds. Bronson's role was originally intended for Sammy Davis Jr., but the implications of an interracial relationship between Taylor and Davis's character saw Davis's casting quashed by Martin Ransohoff, the producer of ''The Sandpiper''.
