Elgin V. Kuykendall
Elgin Victor Kuykendall (1870–1958) was an American lawyer, judge, and politician in the Washington (state), state of Washington in the United States. For several years the chairman of the state committee of the Republican Party of Washington, Kuykendall was first elected to the Washington State Senate in November 1916 and re-elected to a second term two years later. Kuykendall was appointed a judge of the Washington State Superior court in December 1924 and remained in that capacity until his retirement in December 1949. In his twilight years Kuykendall also pursued the avocation of regional historian, ultimately publishing two works on the history of Southeastern Washington state as well as his memoirs. The Republican Party, also referred to as the GOP ("Grand Old Party"), is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States. The GOP was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery activists who opposed the Kansas–Nebraska Act, which allowed for the potential expansion of chattel slavery into the western territories. Since Ronald Reagan's presidency in the 1980s, conservatism has been the dominant ideology of the GOP. It has been the main political rival of the Democratic Party since the mid-1850s. Pullman () is the largest city in Whitman County, located in southeastern Washington within the Palouse region of the Pacific Northwest. The Knights of Pythias is the first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. It was founded by Justus H. Rathbone, who had been inspired by a play by the Irish poet John Banim about the legend of Damon and Pythias.
