Eleonora Carrillo is a Salvadoran model who participated in the 44th edition of Miss Universe pageant, held in Windhoek, Namibia. Miss Universe 1995 In Miss Universe, Carrillo placed in the semifinals; making it the first time El Salvador was placed in a Miss Universe contest since Carmen Elena Figueroa's participation in 1975. Although she had the highest score in the interview session, she had the lowest score in both the swimsuit and evening gown portion, which ultimately cost her a spot in the top 6. Miss Universe 1995, the 44th Miss Universe pageant, was held on 12 May 1995 at the Windhoek Country Club Resort in Windhoek, Namibia. Chelsi Smith of the United States was crowned by Sushmita Sen of India at the end of the event. Eighty-two contestants competed in this year. This marks the first and only time it was held in Africa. Miss Universe 1975, the 24th Miss Universe pageant, was held on 19 July 1975 at the Gimnasio Nacional José Adolfo Pineda, National Gymnasium in San Salvador, El Salvador. Anne Marie Pohtamo won the title for Finland, thus making her the second Finnish woman to win the Miss Universe crown after Armi Kuusela, who was the first Miss Universe winner, in 1952. After Spain's Amparo Muñoz resigned the previous year, her successor was crowned by Miss Universe 1972, Kerry Anne Wells of Australia. The political backdrop to the 1975 Miss Universe pageant was not a happy one, however. According to the New York Times, August 5, "while a worldwide television audience saw El Salvador’s sunny beaches before the “Miss Universe” finals July 19, off-camera heavily armed troops were called out to halt demonstrations by students protesting the Government's expenditure of $1-million on the contest". The Salvadoran Civil War ( es, guerra civil de El Salvador) was a twelve year period of civil war in El Salvador that was fought between the government of El Salvador and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), a coalition or "umbrella organization" of left-wing groups.
