Electribe
Electribe is a group of electronic musical instruments by Korg. From its beginnings with the Electribe R to the ESX-1, this series includes both analogue modeling synthesizers and sampling drum machines that can be programmed the same as a drum machine. The analogue modeling synth and sampling drum machine both share a ''drum-pattern'' section and a ''synth-pattern'' section, whereby the user can not only program drum patterns, but also synth and basslines. These hybrid machines could be considered 'grooveboxes'. The launch party for the product in 1999 was announced with a recorded CD invitation that was featured in Entertainment Weekly magazine as one of the best party invitations of the year. The Korg Electribe A (EA-1) is an analogue modeling synthesizer in the Korg Electribe series first produced in 1999. Functions The EA-1 can store a total of 256 (64 x 4 banks) phrases or patterns plus 16 songs consisting of multiple patterns. The EA-1 can be synchronised to other MIDI devices using tap tempo or MIDI clock, or by tapping in the beat and synchronising to a turntable or other non-MIDI sound sources. Korg Electribe EM-1
The Korg Electribe EM-1 is a digital synthesizer first produced by Korg in 1999, alongside the EA-1 and ER-1. Korg discontinued production of the EM-1 in 2002 and replaced the model with the Electribe EMX. The EM-1 combines a drum machine and two-part synthesizer with a sequencer. Its design combined elements of the Korg Electribe EA-1 and ER-1 to offer an "all-in-one" groovebox. The Electribe series was noted for its compact size, weighing 1.25 kg and measuring only 300mm x 222mm x 55mm. The synth's sound engine consists of 50 synth and 144 drum waveforms, both pitch and rhythmic in nature. Waveform editing capabilities include: volume, panning, envelope, filtering, roll-effect, internal effects processing, pitch, and glide (portamento). The filter is a 12 dB/oct low-pass with cutoff and resonance controls. The onboard sequencer can hold 256 patterns which can be chained together to form a "song". Korg Electribe R
The Korg Electribe R was released in 1999 as a dedicated electronic drum machine to complement the Korg Electribe A bass synthesizer. It features a 64 step sequencer and is MIDI-controllable. The sound is generated by digital signal processor circuits but can be manipulated in realtime (analog modeling synthesizer principle). A cross modulation function (replacing the previous ring modulation of the Mk I version) can be applied to percussion synthesizers 1 and 2 in the ER-1 Mk II version. The only other differences were new preset rhythm patterns and the metal casing. Because of the easy programming possibilities and competitive pricing the ER-1 quickly became popular among DJs and studio musicians. Analog Modeling Synthesizer
An analog modeling synthesizer is a synthesizer that generates the sounds of traditional analog synthesizers using digital signal processing, DSP components and software algorithms. Analog modeling synthesizers simulate the behavior of the original electronic circuitry in order to digitally replicate their tone. This method of synthesis is also referred to as ''virtual analog'' or VA. Analog modeling synthesizers can be more reliable than their true analog counterparts since the oscillator pitch is ultimately maintained by a digital clock, and the digital hardware is typically less susceptible to temperature changes. While analog synthesizers need an oscillator circuit for each voice of polyphony, analog modeling synthesizers do not face this problem. Groovebox
A groovebox is a self-contained electronic or digital musical instrument for the production of live, loop-based electronic music with a high degree of user control facilitating improvisation. The term "Groovebox" was originally used by Roland Corporation to refer to its MC-303, released in 1996. The term has since entered general use, and the concept dates back to the Movement Computer Systems Drum Computer in 1981.
