Division Of Bendigo
The Division of Bendigo is an Australian electoral division in the state of Victoria. The division was proclaimed in 1900, and was one of the original 65 divisions to be contested at the first federal election. It is named for the city of Bendigo. The division is situated on the northern foothills of the Great Dividing Range in North Central Victoria. It covers an area of approximately and provides the southern gateway to the Murray–Darling basin. In addition to the city of Bendigo, other large population centres in the division include , , Kyneton and . George Rankin
George James Rankin, (1 May 1887 – 28 December 1957) was an Australian soldier and politician. He served in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, representing the Country Party of Australia. Early life Rankin was born at Bamawm, Victoria, the tenth child of Irish farmer James Rankin and Sarah, née Gallagher. He attended the local state school and became a farmer. In 1907, he joined the Militia, and was commissioned in the 9th Light Horse Regiment in 1909. He married Annie Isabella Oliver at Rochester, Victoria on 7 July 1912. In 1914, he was appointed a lieutenant of the Australian Imperial Force and posted to the 4th Light Horse Regiment. Military service Rankin served in the 4th Light Horse Regiment and reached Gallipoli in May 1915, was wounded in July, became a captain in December, and a major in March 1916. Bruce Reid (politician)
Nicholas Bruce Reid (30 July 1935 – 24 May 2020) was an Australian politician. Born in Bendigo, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, he served in the military in 1958 and then became a retailer. In 1976, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council as the Liberal Party of Australia (Victorian Division), Liberal member for Bendigo Province. He remained in the Legislative Council until 1988. In 1990, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Liberal member for the federal seat of Division of Bendigo, Bendigo, defeating John Brumby. After the Liberals lost the 1993 federal election he contested the Liberal leadership with John Howard and John Hewson, but received only one vote. He held the seat of Bendigo until his retirement in 1998. John Brumby
John Mansfield Brumby (born 21 April 1953) is the current Chancellor of La Trobe University and former Victorian Labor Party politician who was Premier of Victoria from 2007 to 2010. He became leader of the Victorian Labor Party and premier after the resignation of Steve Bracks. He also served as the Minister for Veterans' Affairs and the Minister for Multicultural Affairs. He contested his first election as premier at the November 2010 Victorian state election. His government was defeated by the Liberal/National Coalition led by Ted Baillieu. John Bourchier (politician)
John William Bourchier, CBE (12 October 1929 – 31 August 2017) was an Australian politician. Born in Ballarat, he was a company manager before entering politics. In 1972, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Liberal member for Bendigo, unseating Labor incumbent David Kennedy even as Labor ended the Coalition's record 23 years in government. He served as a party whip in the Fraser government. In 1978 he led a delegation of MPs to Russia. He held the seat until his defeat by the future Victorian Premier John Brumby in 1983. David Kennedy (Australian Politician)
Andrew David Kennedy (born 20 March 1940) is a former Australian politician. Born in Ulverstone, Tasmania, he attended University High School in Melbourne and then the University of Melbourne, after which he became a teacher in Victorian state schools. In 1969, he was elected as a Labor member to the Australian House of Representatives in the by-election for the seat of Bendigo following Noel Beaton's resignation. He held the seat until his defeat in 1972. In 1982, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the member for Bendigo, and in 1985 he transferred to Bendigo West, a position he held until 1992 when the Labor government was defeated. Kennedy's older brother, Cyril James Kennedy, also served in the Victorian state parliament, as the member for the Legislative Council seat of Waverley from 1979 to 1992. Noel Beaton
Noel Lawrence Beaton (28 December 1925 – 18 December 2004) was an Australian politician. Born in Mooroopna, Victoria, he was educated at state schools and was a volunteer firefighter in his home town, before serving in the military from 1945 to 1947, after which he became a sports journalist and broadcaster. In 1960, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Labor member for Bendigo, narrowly winning a by-election for that seat that followed the death of Percy Clarey.
