Electoral District Of Toowong
Toowong was an Queensland Legislative Assembly electoral districts, electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1888 to 1992. It was centred on the Northern Brisbane, Queensland, Brisbane suburb of Toowong, Queensland, Toowong. Redistributions over the years extended Toowong toward Mount Coot-tha, Queensland, Mt Coot-tha and Moggill, Queensland, Moggill, and it shrank back toward the populated areas when Electoral district of Mount Coot-tha, Mt Coot-tha was given its own district. Toowong was abolished in the 1991 redistribution, and its territories were absorbed into the districts of Electoral district of Mount Coot-tha, Mt Coot-tha and Electoral district of Indooroopilly, Indooroopilly. Toowong
Toowong is a riverside suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Toowong had a population of 10,830 people. Geography Toowong is situated between Mount Coot-tha and the Brisbane River and is made up of rolling hills with little flat land. Since European settlement most of the land has been cleared for residential and commercial use with the exception of some park land and bushland near the Western Freeway. At the centre of Toowong is a commercial precinct including Toowong Village, and several other commercial and office buildings. The western side of the suburb is predominantly residential with a mix of medium density dwellings and detached Queenslander houses, extending to the foothills of Mount Coot-tha. Toowong borders the Brisbane River. Liberal Party (Queensland, 1908)
The Liberal Party was a political party in the Australian state of Queensland in the early 20th century. It combined the main non-Labor forces, the "Kidstonites" of William Kidston and the Conservatives of Robert Philp, similar to the federal Commonwealth Liberal Party whose fusion it preceded. The Liberals held government from their formation in 1908 until defeat in 1915 after which they combined with other elements in the state to form the National Party. Earle Bailey
Earle Wilfred Bailey OAM (5 October 1941 – 8 July 2023) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1983 to 1986. Early life Earle Wilfred Bailey was born in Melbourne, Victoria on 5 October 1941, the son of W.B. Bailey-Tart and his wife Mary Ethel (née Page). His maternal grandfather was Sir Earle Page, 11th Prime Minister of Australia in 1939. Bailey was educated at South Grafton Primary School, The Armidale School, and Brisbane Grammar School. After finishing his education, Bailey worked as a journalist and film producer. On 28 May 1966, Bailey married Penelope Edith Reilly. The couple had a son and a daughter. Ian Prentice
Ian George Prentice (born 9 November 1948) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Prentice was born in Brisbane, Queensland, the son of Dr. Peter George Driver Prentice and his wife Joan Elizabeth (née Masters). He attended Shorncliffe State School before completing his schooling at St Paul's School at Bald Hills. He then graduated from the University of Queensland with a LL.B. Working as a barrister, he also worked for the federal government in census and statistics and was a research officer for John Moore, the federal member for Ryan. Charles Porter (Australian Politician)
Charles Robert Porter ( – ) was a British born Australian politician, author, playwright and broadcaster. He was the Liberal member for the Electoral District of Toowong in the Legislative Assembly of the Australian state of Queensland from 1966, and the Minister for Aboriginal and Island Affairs from 1977. Before his parliamentary career, Porter engaged in a career in radio and broadcasting, along with other creative pursuits. Porter was the father of 1956 Olympic silver medallist Charles "Chilla" Porter. Charles Wanstall
Sir Charles Gray Wanstall (17 February 1912 – 17 October 1999) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He was also the Chief Justice of Queensland. Biography Wanstall was born at Brisbane, Queensland, the son of Ernest William Wanstall and his wife Emma (née Boyce). He attended state school in Roma and Gympie and then the Gympie High School (Secondary Education – Junior Certificate). He attended night school and studied Law with the Bar Board (Formal Education – Barristers Board Queensland) to become a Barrister (Barrister-at-Law) and having completed the Bar Board requirements in 1933 and was admitted as a Barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland. United Australia Party – Queensland
The United Australia Party was the short-lived Queensland branch of the national United Australia Party in the 1930s and 1940s. Based around Brisbane, it spent the entire of its history in opposition, merging in 1941 into the Country-National Organisation. When that party separated in 1944, the remnants of the UAP joined the Queensland People's Party which in 1949 became the Liberal Party of Australia (Queensland Division) History Although the federal UAP was formed in 1931 amidst a reorganisation of the right of politics, at the state level the main conservative party remained the Country and Progressive National Party which combined urban and rural forces. Harry Massey
Harry Massey was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for Toowong. Early life He was born in Melbourne, Victoria, on 6 June 1888. He became President of the Australian Natives' Association, Melbourne Branch at 21 years of age. He was also prominent in the YMCA, a member of the Commercial Travellers' Association, the Royal Queensland Yacht Club, the Constitutional Club and Indooroopilly Golf Club. Politics Massey was elected as an alderman of the Brisbane City Council for the Toowong ward in 1931 and held that role until 1937. Country And Progressive National Party
The Country and Progressive National Party was a short-lived conservative political party in the Australian state of Queensland. Formed in 1925, it combined the state's conservative forces in a single party and held office between 1929 and 1932 under the leadership of Arthur Edward Moore. Following repeated election defeat it split into separate rural and urban wings in 1936.
