South Coast is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is represented by Shelley Hancock of the Liberal Party. It incorporates almost all of the City of Shoalhaven to the south of the Shoalhaven river, notably Nowra, Ulladulla and Milton. Shelley Hancock
Shelley Elizabeth Hancock (born 14 November 1951), an Australian politician. Hancock has been a Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly seat of South Coast since 2003. Hancock previously served as the thirtieth Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and was the first woman to hold the role, serving between May 2011 and March 2019. Hancock also served as the Minister for Local Government in the second Berejiklian ministry and the Perrottet ministry between April 2019 and December 2021. Early years and background Hancock grew up in Chatswood and attended primary schools in Chatswood and Artarmon and the North Sydney Girls High School. Henry Bate (Australian Politician)
Henry John Bate (19 April 1881 – 4 January 1967) was an Australian politician. Born at Tilba Tilba to farmer Richard Mossop Bate and Henrietta Higman, he was educated at Newington College (1897–1899),Newington College Register of Past Students 1863–1998 (Syd, 1999) p. 11 Sydney Technical and Hawkesbury Agricultural Colleges before becoming a farmer. On 2 May 1905 he married Lily Percival, with whom he had two sons; he would later remarry Elise May Mead on 23 May 1918. In 1910 he was elected to Eurobodalla Shire Council, serving until 1913 and again from 1917 to 1928. In 1926 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Nationalist member for Goulburn, transferring to South Coast in 1927. In 1931 he joined the United Australia Party. The New South Wales Electoral Commission is a statutory agency with responsibility for the administration, organisation, and supervision of elections in New South Wales. It reports to the NSW Government Department of Premier and Cabinet. Responsibilities The NSW Electoral Commission is responsible for the administration, organisation and supervision of elections in New South Wales for state government, local government, industrial and Aboriginal organisations, as well as registered clubs and statutory bodies. Wayne Smith (Australian Politician)
Wayne Douglas Smith (born 4 November 1952) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1999 to 2003, representing the electorate of South Coast. He was the only incumbent ALP member to lose his seat at the 2003 state election. Smith was born in Newcastle and educated at Birrong Boys High School. He received a B.Sc. and a Dip.Ed from the University of Sydney. Smith trained as a teacher, and was working at Vincentia High School when he decided to contest ALP pre-selection for the Liberal-held state seat of South Coast. Eric James Ellis (born 9 December 1942) is a former Australian politician. Born in Sydney, New South Wales, he was a pharmaceutical wholesaler on the South Coast before entering politics. Ellis had also represented Australia in ten pin bowling, and had served in the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment Regular Army. In 1990, he joined the Liberal Party. In 1995, when the sitting independent member for South Coast in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, John Hatton, retired, Ellis was elected to the seat as the Liberal candidate. John Hatton (politician)
John Edward Hatton (born 29 May 1933) is a former Australian politician, and a National Trust of Australia nominated Australian Living Treasure. He was the independent member of the Legislative Assembly of the New South Wales parliament for the seat of South Coast from 1973 to 1995. Notably, the allegations about police corruption which Hatton raised in Parliament resulted in the Wood Royal Commission. He is currently a social activist in his local community. Jack Gordon Beale AO (17 July 1917 – 7 June 2006) was an Australian politician who championed the need for Australia to conserve and develop its water resources. He was also Australia's first environment minister. Rupert Noel Beale (24 December 1889 – 28 September 1942) was an Australian politician and an Independent member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for 16 months from May 1941 until his death. Early life Beale was born in Summer Hill, New South Wales, and was the son of a builder. He was educated to secondary level and was a qualified carpenter. Between 1910 and 1915, Beale was involved in a large number of enterprises including being an auctioneer, real estate agent and business broker. He was a dairy farmer in Aberdeen, New South Wales, from 1916 until he was bankrupted in 1922. He was not discharged from his bankruptcy until 1940. In the 1920s and 1930s he was a hotel manager in Newcastle, Sydney and the South Coast of New South Wales. He also had a real estate agency in 1934. Milton, New South Wales
Milton is a village in the South Coast region of New South Wales, Australia, within the City of Shoalhaven. It was founded in 1860, named after the property of post master George Knight and became an important regional centre during the 19th Century. Today, Milton remains one of the two main commercial centres of the Milton-Ulladulla district, with a population at the of 1,663. It is a popular stopping place for travellers on the Princes Highway which runs through the centre of town. Ulladulla, New South Wales
Ulladulla is a coastal town in New South Wales, Australia in the City of Shoalhaven local government area. It is on the Princes Highway about south of Sydney, halfway between Batemans Bay to the south and Nowra to the north. Ulladulla has close links with the nearby historic settlement of Milton and many services are shared between these towns. History The name Ulladulla is the modern spelling of an Aboriginal word, the meaning of which is unknown. Some records show the name meaning "safe harbour" but local Aboriginal Elders dispute the meaning and point out that a harbour for boats is a modern idea. The name was corrupted to "Holy Dollar" at one time. Alternative spellings as Woolladoorh or Ngulla-dulla have been recorded.
