Peel was an Electoral districts of Western Australia, electoral district of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1989 to 2008. The district was based in the south-western suburbs of Perth. Peel was at all times a safe Australian Labor Party (Western Australian Branch), Labor seat. History Peel was first created for the 1989 Western Australian state election, 1989 state election. It was won by Labor candidate Norm Marlborough, who retained the seat at all subsequent elections. 2007 by-election Marlborough resigned in late 2006 amidst a corruption scandal. The resulting by-election saw Labor candidate Paul Papalia elected as the district's new member. Peel (Western Australia)
The Peel region is one of the nine regions of Western Australia. It is located on the west coast of Western Australia, about south of the state capital, Perth. It consists of the City of Mandurah, and the Shires of Shire of Boddington, Boddington, Shire of Murray, Murray, Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, Serpentine-Jarrahdale and Shire of Waroona, Waroona. The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. The Australian Labor Party (Western Australian Branch), commonly known as WA Labor, is the Western Australian branch of the Australian Labor Party. 1989 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 4 February 1989 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The Labor government, led by Premier Peter Dowding, won a third term in office against the Liberal Party, led by Opposition Leader Barry MacKinnon. The result was a major swing against the Labor Party, coming in the wake of revelations of dealings between Government and business that came to be known as WA Inc. The redistribution that took place in 1988, based upon the ''Acts Amendment (Electoral Reform) Act 1987'' which abolished several country and outer metropolitan electorates while creating new metropolitan ones, makes it difficult to assess how Labor would have performed on the old boundaries—while it lost four seats, it gained one Liberal-held seat and won several of the new seats, so in net terms, it only lost one seat despite the massive swing and the low two-party-preferred result. Norman Richard Marlborough (born 12 August 1945) is a former Australian politician. Biography Originally from England, Marlborough was born in Westow, Yorkshire, and arrived in Western Australia in 1963. Before he entered parliament, he was a fitter and turner and later a union official. He was elected as a Labor Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly for the seat of Cockburn at a by-election on 7 June 1986, following the death of Clive Hughes. In 1989, he transferred to the new seat of Peel after a redistribution. Marlborough served in a number of Shadow portfolios and then in Government in Parliamentary Secretary roles. Paul Papalia CSC (born 12 July 1962) is an Australian politician. He has been a Labor Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly since February 2007. Originally the member for Peel. He is now the member for Warnbro. A decorated former navy diver who served two tours in Iraq, Papalia entered parliament after winning a by-election sparked by the resignation of scandal-tarred former minister Norm Marlborough. Early life and naval career Papalia was born in Bunbury, Western Australia and grew up in the nearby small town of Burekup. He served in the Royal Australian Navy for 26 years before entering politics, working as a navy diver and rising to the rank of lieutenant commander. He specialised in explosives retrieval and escape and rescue. Papalia completed Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) selection and reinforcement training in 1988. 2008 Western Australian State Election
The 2008 Western Australian state election was held on Saturday 6 September 2008 to elect 59 members to the Legislative Assembly and 36 members to the Legislative Council. The incumbent centre-left Labor Party government, in power since the 2001 election and led since 25 January 2006 by Premier Alan Carpenter, was defeated by the centre-right Liberal Party opposition, led by Opposition Leader Colin Barnett since 6 August 2008. The election resulted in a hung parliament with no party gaining a majority. Labor was two seats short of a majority in the expanded legislature. Ultimately, the Liberals were able to form a coalition government with the WA Nationals, supported by three independents. Kwinana is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is located in the south-western suburbs of Perth. History Kwinana was first created for the 2008 state election. It was a new urban seat created as a result of the one vote one value reforms. For the most part it combined the southern portion of the district of Cockburn with the northern part of the district of Peel; it also took in territory previously covered by the districts of Rockingham and Serpentine-Jarrahdale.
