New South Wales Legislative Assembly Electoral Districts
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is elected from single-member electorates called districts, returning 93 members since the 1999 election. Prior to 1927 some districts returned multiple members, including 1920-1927 when all districts returned 3,4 or 5 members. Parramatta is the only district to have continuously existed since the establishment of the Assembly in 1856. The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Newtown is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It includes the inner Sydney suburbs of Redfern, Chippendale, Darlington, Eveleigh, Newtown, Enmore, Stanmore and Petersham and parts of Surry Hills, Waterloo, Erskineville, Camperdown, Marrickville and Lewisham. It is held by Jenny Leong of the . History Newtown was originally created in 1859, and named after and including Newtown. It elected one member from 1859 to 1880, two members from 1880 to 1885, three members from 1885 to 1891 and four members from 1891 to 1894. With the abolition of multi-member constituencies in 1894, it was replaced by Newtown-Camperdown, Newtown-Erskine, Newtown-St Peters and Marrickville.
