The Division of Leichhardt is an Australian Electoral Division in Queensland. Geography Since 1984, federal electoral division boundaries in Australia have been determined at redistributions by a redistribution committee appointed by the Australian Electoral Commission. Redistributions occur for the boundaries of divisions in a particular state, and they occur every seven years, or sooner if a state's representation entitlement changes or when divisions of a state are malapportioned. History The division was first contested in 1949 after the expansion of seats in the Parliament of Australia. It is one of Australia's largest electorates, covering an area stretching from Cairns to Cape York and the Torres Strait, including the Torres Strait Islands. The division is named after Ludwig Leichhardt, an explorer and scientist. The area was first covered by the seat of Herbert from 1901 to 1934 and then by the seat of Kennedy until 1949. Leichhardt was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, created in 1894, with the abolition of multi-member electorates and partly replacing Balmain, and named after and including the Sydney suburb of Leichhardt. Leichhardt was an Queensland Legislative Assembly electoral districts, electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1860 to 1932. Taking in areas of central Queensland west of the Great Dividing Range, the district in its original form stretched as far as Mackay, Queensland, Mackay in the north and as far south as Taroom, Queensland, Taroom. Originally a dual member constituency, it was one of the sixteen districts contested at the 1860 Queensland colonial election, first colonial election in 1860. It became a single member constituency in 1873 but reverted to being a dual member electorate in 1878. A single member constituency again in 1888, it remained that way thereafter. One of the district's first members was Robert Herbert, the first Premier of Queensland. Electoral District Of Leichhardt, Queensland (New South Wales)
Leichhardt was an electoral district, located in the colony of New South Wales, Australia, and part of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. The district was created for the July 1859 election, partly replacing the United Pastoral Districts of Moreton, Wide Bay, Burnett, Maranoa, Leichhardt and Port Curtis in the present day central Queensland. It included the towns of Rockhampton and Emerald, the pastoral districts around the Leichhardt River in the Gulf of Carpentaria region and Port Curtis (Gladstone). It was abolished in December 1859 as a result of the separation of Queensland. The district is one of 4 seats named after Ludwig Leichhardt. The Legislative Assembly of Queensland was established in 1860 and the central Queensland area continued to be part of a district named Leichhardt, until that district was abolished in 1932.
